Another Saturday night is upon us, yet this one is a bit different. Tonight & into Sunday morning there will be the Orionid Meteor Shower. *Fun fact: this and other meteor showers are remnants of Halley's Comet.
This footage of the last stages of a Milkweed's lifecycle taken while on a hike earlier this week reminds me a bit of the way watching a meteor shower can make one feel.
The bright flash, & white tail of the meteor streaming through the dark sky, so fragile. Like the silk that will take these seeds aloft, spreading new life when the conditions are right.
**[Great for the Monarch Butterflies(Danauz plexippus), too. The sap & leaves of Milkweed(Asclepias syriaca) is toxic to most birds. So, since over time the Monarch Butterfly has developed a preference for it as a food source, this has toxicity has increased the butterfly's likelihood of survival. Losses to the population less from predation, & more due to natural causes, pesticides & vehicular collisions.]
Like the Milk Weed, it is believed that meteors (under the right conditions), can foster or nurture life on this & other planets.
*Unfortunately, it's clouded over & raining in this area, or you'd find a short hunched figure with a tripod camped out in a darkened field. Trying desperately to get the shot, while gazing above. Marveling at such an immensely beautiful occasion.
**The Orionid Shower Runs from Sept 23-Nov 27. Other meteor showers may be seen in other times of the year, depending on where one looks in the sky. The next meteor shower is the Geminid which is expected in December.
