Part 3 of my time at @kaarakin
, hanging with the handsome Red tailed cocka Kimba and his beautiful female red-tailed friends. Also had the pleasure meeting the super inquisitive and cute Carnaby's cocka Franklin and friends 😊
A few facts about Red Tails and Carnaby's from environment.gov.au/biodiversity:
Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos are found in all mainland states, and inhabit a wide variety of habitats, especially forests and woodlands dominated by eucalypts or casuarinas.
Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo is endemic to southwest WA. Most breeding occurs typically in the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions.
Sadly, Carnaby's are listed as Endangered with populations declining by over 50% in the last 50 years.
Both species can live in the wild for up to 40-50years. Threats to their survival include:
Deforrestation of their natural habitats; more importantly the removal of nest hollows for use as firewood or just to make properties look 'tidy'. Much woodland lacks hollows, and it takes over 100 years for woodland seedlings to mature and form hollows suitable for nesting.
Competition for hollows from other species.
Loss of native food sources caused by urban developments on coastal plains.
Poaching: illegal poaching is still a threat - trees are often cut down or the hollow severely damaged when young and eggs are taken, removing breeding sites.
Invasive species: other bird species such as the Galah and the Western Long-billed Corella are extending their range in the Wheatbelt and are competing with and excluding Carnaby's Black-Cockatoos from traditional nest hollows. .
