Check out this amazing siphonophore that @noaaoceanexploration
spotted at Rose Atoll in National Marine Sanctuary of #AmericanSamoa
! This is potentially a new species of dandelion siphonophore, and was imaged using its tentacles to attach to the iron-manganese encrusted rocks in the deep slopes of Rose Atoll. Although it appears to be a single organism, siphonophores are actually colonies of highly specialized individuals!
Throughout February, the crew of the @noaa
ship Okeanos Explorer is exploring the deep waters in and around National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. You can join the researchers LIVE every day as they use remotely operated vehicles to explore the deep ocean! The dives are livestreamed in real time -- check out the link in our profile to learn how you can tune in.
