I love the place names of the American West and Iron Mountain is a great example. The Iron Mountain trail is one of San Diego’s most popular hikes and is easily one of my favorites. The hike was just challenging enough to be a great workout and the exertion was well-rewarded by the views of Ramona and Poway both along the way and the whole San Diego area from the summit. The final photo is the base of a rotating viewfinder pointing out landmarks in all directions.
Through the viewfinder at the summit I caught my first glimpse of Mt. Whitney, a bucket list hike for me, and the looking for that snow capped peak the rest of my day filled me with eagerness and purpose.
The mark of a good hobby is an activity which gives more than it takes, and hiking may be the pastime that rewards me the most. The amount of creativity I feel, the degree of mental clarity i am granted, and vitalizing energy I experience is unmatched by anything else I do. I never want to leave the summit of any hill or mountain I climb. New sights, incredible colors, birds circling below me, solitude as well as fellowship with other hikers who paid the toll in sweat for an irreproducible view are elements of a feeling I cannot quite conceive in its entirety.
