Sorry for the in activity on here. With my beta readers taking the stage, there's not really much I'm working on that I can tell you guys about. Most of it's secret. 😆
Spring has officially Sprung however! There are violets and spring beauties carpeting my backyard. I feel like I'm living in fairyland. And perhaps I am. After all, being an author IS a rather magical job...
Is this the look you get when trying to talk with your kids? In my latest blog post I address effective strategies in breaking through to (even the most side-eye-giving) kids. Link in bio! Going live at 4pm!
today's office is a sunny patch in the living room. I have a perfectly nice office, but whenever I'm feeling stuck I have to move to another room. Does anyone else do that?
Have you always wanted to write a book, but you just haven't known where to start? Today on my blog and YouTube channel, I am sharing my top tips for how to get started as a writer. Follow the link in my profile!
The lilacs are blooming in my neighborhood and I love to stop and smell them. This poem started out talking about lilacs and ended with my family home burning down (true story). 😐😐 Ya gotta let the poem tell the story it wants to tell.

Hi, guys! I just wanted to talk today about passion, writing, and us (obviously 😅). I’ve been having trouble deciding what to write practically for the past 6 years. That was the last time I can think of where I wrote something purely for the joy of it. Even a little then and most definitely now as I am about to enter the post-grad career world in a few weeks, I find myself thinking about how I can make money with my writing. This leads to a dangerous path of trying to please the reader and think of what stories make the most money. Does anyone else have this problem? It drives me mad. I think of certain plots and twists and character relationships I would like to do that would fascinate me to write, but I always question my ideas now based on how well they might cater to a paying audience. And I hate that I do that so much. Because it has damaged my writing. It puts a taint on all of writing because I prematurely judge every idea the second it pops into my head on whether or not a large audience would read it and I could get that best selling book bragging rights and money like I always wanted since I was 10. But I’m trying more and more every day to tell myself the hard truth: I could write a thousand best sellers and make all the money I want, but if I’m writing something I hate or feel like I have to write to please readers, it will never be close to fulfilling. It will never be satisfying. I will always wonder if the readers would have liked XYZ better than what I felt I -had- to write to make people happy. So I’m trying to write for the fun of it. Trying to write what I’m most passionate about. But it’s hard when I need to make a living and spend my time wisely. It’s so hard. Do any of you run into similar thinking as you’re writing? How have you tried to break this pattern of destructive thinking?

Ok fellow authors. A question. After doing a lot of research, I am considering self-publishing my novel. I've only sent it out to one publishing house so far, but from everything I've read, it seems like most first novels don't get a PR budget from the Publishing House, unless you land one of the Big Five, and it can be a handful of years before finding a house that thinks you're worth the risk without a track record.
That being said, I've read that first-time authors end up selling and promoting the book themselves anyway and only earn 30% (as opposed to 70% if you self-publish) of the sales profit.
It's a quandary, right? I could put my story out in the world now, OR spend countless more hours, perhaps years, hoping that a publishing house will see it as a profitable risk.
Tell me. Did you self-publish, and why? Would you do it again?
(This is my mock cover, with a photo I took in my story's location. Isn't it gorgeous?!)

When I ponder someone’s art, I search for the roots of what brought them to create what they did. It is in this place of deeper understanding where you find better appreciation for one another and the art that flows out of each one of us.
