‘British artist Claire Milner’s visual vocabulary draws widely from many areas including politics, fashion, science and the natural world. Working in collections with art historical references, her paintings simultaneously explore the role of the artist as a witness to her own time in history. Milner’s primary focus relates to the environment, our place within it and encroachment upon it. Her paintings accentuate the uneasy juxtaposition of abundance and loss. They highlight and contrast commercial values with those of environmental ideals as determinants of worth. The impact of humanity is always implicit within her artworks, even when the human figure is absent or plays a minor role in the composition. The artist’s literal and allegorical portrayal of animals follows a long history of animal images in art for as long as humans have existed; from the first cave art, in historical mosaics and in countless paintings. Additional interconnecting themes include climate change, socio-political power disparities and the inequitable position of female artists in the canon of art history. Milner’s process begins with extensive research into her topical subject matter which is then interwoven with references to historical art and literature. Her diverse methods include mixed media, collage, typography and traditional painting techniques. The artist also frequently incorporates rigorous mosaic methodologies, rooted in the skills of an ancient art form and translates them into vibrant and uniquely individual crystal mosaics in a medium synonymous with high fashion and sustainable luxury. Milner’s evolving collections of works represent a symbiosis of the ancient and the contemporary and utilize her creative platform to make a positive social and environmental impact. They have a multi-layered aesthetic in presenting a surface optimism with a depth that concurrently speaks to much darker issues.’

Han Terracotta Sculpture of a Dog 🐕 Circa: 206 to 220 AD Dimensions: 16" (40.6cm) high x 18" (45.7cm) wide This magnificent terracotta dog dates to the Han era, the golden age of ceramic funerary sculpture. The fashion for terracotta grave goods, also known as mingqi, was undoubtedly stimulated by the example of the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty whose terracotta army is now legendary. Terracotta replicas of attendants, entertainers and domesticated animals – which replaced their sentient counterparts sacrificed in earlier dynasties – were among the items interred to ensure the material comfort of the deceased in the afterlife. This practice continued to flourish until the fall of the Tang dynasty in the early tenth century, after which it became more common to burn the items intended to accompany the deceased. The large dog stands steadfast: legs four- square, hind legs slightly extended as though ready to pounce, ears pricked up, brow furrowed, and tail curled upwards. Furthermore, it appears muscular, jawline defined, torso robust. The dog’s demeanor demonstrates its function of attentively guarding his master throughout eternity, as it would have in the past life. The striking red collar, which appears to be more of a harness continuing further down the body, further attests to the dog’s domestication. In all, the figure has a wonderful realistic quality that breaks away from the Han style of reducing figures to their mere essence. We get to truly visualize the essence of the dog, as well as dwell on its inner spirit. #ancientdog #dog #handynasty #chineseart #terracotta #ancientchinese #ancientchina #ancientart #barakatgallery #barakatlondon #woof
Day 106: . Herculaneum. . There are a few incredibly special pieces at Pompeii’s smaller but better preserved cousin and this is one of them. Inside the house of Neptune and Amphitite, so named after this glass mosaic (still with original sea shells round the outside!) of the God and his wife in the summer dining room or “Triclinium,” there is a chance to really observe how rich and opulent the waterfront city was. The Roman city much wealthier than Pompeii and whilst much smaller a site, 4 hectares vs 66, (Herculaneum is still mostly unexcavated) the Volcanic mud that covered the area has left so many treasures perfectly preserved. . Every floor was decorated with tiles made of chips of pottery, every wall was painted in bright and rich reds and ocres. Mosaics, reliefs and paintings hung from all rooms, the city had fresh water piped in through lead (lol) pipes and a fully working sewage system with ducts under its streets. There were stunning communal bath houses, shops, laundrettes and bars, all created in the 6th-7th Century BC! . Amongst the incredible things you can see at a Herculaneum are original wooden steps and bed frames, doors, statues, paintings, mosaics and numerous food storage items where they uncovered chickpeas and dates and figs! There are also 300 skeletons along the old seashore where people were buried hiding in the ship yard storehouses. . As Alex had been and wasn’t too fussed, I took myself off to Herculaneum on my own for a solo day trip. My personal opinion if you are only able to visit one of the two sites is to see Pompeii purely because it’s size and stature is simply jaw dropping. You can walk around the city imagining you were there as it once was. (Cont. This #museummonday : with the Italian word Putto (plural putti) we indicate the figure of a chubby male naked child often represented with wings. Putto derives from Latin "Putus" that means boy, but it was coined by the father of the history of art Giorgio Vasari in his book "The lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors, and architects" in 1550; In fact we can find Putti in the whole history of art since the Greek age; for example these small statues are some of the most ancient example of this figures. Putti often have allegorical meanings: they mainly represents Cupid or Angels. #history #archeology #romanart #romanstatue #romanstatues #italy #italia #naples #napoli #museoarcheologicodinapoli #museoarcheologico #museum #statue #statues #art #ancientart #putto #putti #rome #ancientrome #bronzesculpture #bronze #bronzes #sculpture #sculptures #greekart #giorgiovasari #vasari #historyofart

Rome must be one of the richest cities – culturally speaking – with its history of kings, emperors, politicians, statesmen and popes. It is certainly one big living museum of art, architecture and artefacts – with examples of ancient, classical and baroque creations at every turn. As Ovid said, “There is no such thing as pure pleasure; some anxiety always goes with it” – and the anxiety is that a lifetime is not long enough to explore what Rome has to offer. • We will be a trusted guide of yours in this Living Museum of Rome! • Don't miss our stories on Art and History 📇🎓 • • • • • #eternalcity #romecaputmundi #ancientrome #art #livingmuseum #ancientart #historyofrome #romanempire #romanstories #historybook #trustedguide #capitolinemuseum

The first Czech book I remember being read was the 1918 classic Lovci mamutů ("The Mammoth Hunters") by Eduard Štorch. He was an archeologist and a novelist and I *loved his books* - that's where I got my archeology nerdiness. His novels range from Paleolithic times to Samo's Empire. In this book, he sneaks in a cameo for the making of Věstonická Venuše, which was found in Dolní Věstonice, Moravia. Dating from 29,000-25,000 BCE, she is the oldest ceramic statuette in the world. Getting to see her when she was on exhibit in the National Museum in 2007 was one of the best things I got to do. (Also, finally using ink for Inktober, and I don't think I'm doing that again) #czechtober #inktober #inktober2018 #inktoberday20 #icantdraw #czechrepublic #czechoslovakia #česko #czech100 #spolecnestoleti #100let #book #kniha #lovcimamutu #mammothhunters #dobakamenna #vestonickavenuse #venus #paleolithic #paleolithicart #ceramic #paleolithicceramic #ancientart #archeology #eduardstorch #czechliterature #historicfiction

One of the main reasons I started climbing was to face my fear of heights. I hoped it would set a standard for how I manage fear in other aspects of my life. Although my fear of heights is slowly fading with more and more time in high places, every so often it comes rushing back. ‘Ancient Art’, in the dark of night, brought me back to day one. . . #fishertowers #visitutah #climbutah #utah #ancientart #desert @benwooster #nightphotography #longexposure @bluewaterropes

Did Romans discover one point linear perspective ? Judging from frescoes in Pompeii, Domus Augusti and in Boscoreale, they were very close to it. At least as close as Flemish mid-15th century painters Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, one step away from Brunelleschi 'invention'. . . . #ancientrome #ancientart #ancienthistory #fresco #pompeii #boscoreale #perspective #painting #timetravelrome
It’s been a while since I’ve shared any photos from my travels to Greece. I don’t know about others, but I feel like I take so many pictures that it’s hard to upload them all at one time. That said, I feel like its a healthy reminder when I do go back through my photos that I am lucky to have someone with family ties to the birth pace of democracy, and that I WILL be back sooner than later. This urn is displayed at the archeological museum in Thessaloniki. The ornate detail in this piece, as with many Greek art works, is astounding. I do wish I had taken photos of the descriptions that accompanied these works of art. Being that it’s close to a year later, I’m finding it difficult to scour the internet for the information I want to share about the photos ive taken. Hope you all enjoy them as much as I do :) #greece #thessaloniki #thessalonikimuseum #ancientart #travelphotography #instatravel #northerngreece #artifacts #greek #travelphotography #worldtraveler #urn #pricelessartwork #gold #ancientgreece
