Lion-headed figures in mithraism (Post 1/2): Such figures can be found more often in the cult rooms of Mithraism. But they don't represent the equally lion-headed "god of time" (to which there will be another special post) but symbolize the 4'th degree of consecration. A key symbol of this is of course not only the lion's head but also the fire shovel. Because fire is the element and symbol of this rank. But why can such figures only be found to this degree of consecration? I will answer that question in the next post on this topic. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancientrome / #ancienthistory / #ancientgod / #ancientreligion / #ancient / #takephotos / #frankfurt
The mosaic of the Mithraeum of the 7 Spheres; This special Mithraeum with its for the Mithrasforschung enormously important mosaic, stands in Ostia Antica. The mosaic is the only one that shows us the possible symbols of the seven degrees of Pentecost in Mithraism. From the lowest level of the Corax to the last level of the Father. This made it possible to be certain in this area of religion that there were these 7 degrees and which symbols they represented. Likewise, every degree was under the protection of a particular god (perhaps also planets, since the Roman gods bore the names of our planet today). This is confirmed by the findings in other Mithraea, which were not dedicated to Mithras. In short, it is a significant find that allows us to understand this ancient religion a bit. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientrome / #ancientcult / #ancientgod / #ancientreligion / #ancientmithras / #ancienthistory / #ancient / #rome / #cult / #god / #solinvictus / #history / #takephotos /
The tauroctonie; Tauroctonia (bull killing) is the modern name of the representation of Mithras killing a bull. Mithras is portrayed as a youth and is dressed in a Roman tunic, long pants and a Phrygian cap. He kneels in the bull-killing scene with his left leg on the back of the bull lying on the ground. With the other leg he stabs away, with the left hand he tears the head of the bull backwards and with the right hand he kills the animal with a stab in the shoulder. Mithras turns his face away from the bull. The cloak of Mithras is often exaggerated, so that one recognizes the inside, which is decorated like a starry sky. According to Mithrasian mythology, Mithras pursued a bull, which he captured and carried on his shoulders into a cave where he sacrificed him for the renewal of the world. From the blood and seeds of the bull, the earth and all life regenerated. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #instatravel / #ancientcult /#ancientrome / #ancientreligion / #ancientmithras / #ancienthistory / #ancient / #cult / #rome / #religion / #history / #takephotos / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #sol / #and / #luna

The 7'th degree of ordination in the Mithraism: "Honor to the fathers from east to west under the protection of Saturn !" The highest rank was taken by the father; since the phrygian cap of Mithras appears among his symbols in Ostia, he can be regarded as an earthly representative of the god. The sacrificial bowl points to its tasks in cultural execution. Staff and sickle stand for the protective deity Saturn. As a father of one congregation you had a kind of charge, like over the facilitie with votive offerings in the Mithraea. There was also the possibilty, that more than one father could be in a congregation. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult /#ancientrome / #ancientreligion / #ancientmithras / #ancienthistory / #ancient / #cult / #rome / #religion / #history / #takephotos / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #sol / #and / #luna
Mithras and Sol (Post 4/4): The ride in the sun chariot; The ride of the both gods in the sun chariot is the end of the deeds, which they had done together. On countless Monuments, we can see Mithras, who is riding together with Sol or is climbing on the chariot. Often Sol put out his hand to Help Mithras. These features are always simmular but the rest of the depiction is on every Monument different. Also it's not clear why they're riding with the sun chariot. Several assume that the both gods are riding into the heaven , where they're waiting for their worshippers. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancientrome / #ancientgod / #ancientreligion / #ancientmithras / #ancienthistory / #ancient / #cult / #rome / #god / #godoflight / #religion / #myreligion / #takephotos
Mithras and Sol (Post 3/4): The cultmeal; After the tauroctonie (Post about this will come, stay tuned!) Mithras took place on the dead body of the bull together with Sol. On this special relief we can see both laying on the bull like on a roman lounger. On the table, which legs are made of the bull's legs, you can ("normally") see bread and grapes . The both gods are holding Cups in the hand, which were probably filled with wine. On other reliefs Cautes and Cautopates are servants for the both gods. The congregations in the cult of Mithras hold the so called "cultmeals". They spent time together and ate together after some religious stuff. Just want to mention that, but it's a bit simmular to the Christian Eucharist and of course also the use of bread and water for the cult meal. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #instagram / #takephotos / #takephotos / #ancientrome / #ancientcult / #ancientgod / #ancientreligion / #ancientmithras / #ancienthistory / #ancient / #rome / #cult / #god / #religion / #mithras / #instatravel / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #sol / #and / #luna
Heliodromus (sunrunner);. "Honor to the heliodroma (sunrunners) under the protection of the sun." The description of this degree of ordination already implys, that his carrier is intrusted to the special protection of Sol; in the ancient the sun counted to the planets. His attribute is/was the torch. The seven-jagged corona with ribons and whip belongs to the sungod. The Contract between Mithras and Sol (Post 2/4): After the acceptance of Sol from Mithras, the so called"treaty of friendship" could follow in the mysteries of Mithras. The two gods are giving the Hand to each other in front of a burning altar. In their right hands they hold together a dagger, on which sticks a piece of meat. A raven is flying to the dagger. This scene is placed on an altare stone from Ptuj. We know this also from different scenes. After the acceptance Mithras and Sol were equated gods. But they fortified their friendship, with the typical Handshake. I think the gods did this before they tooked their meal on the dead bull ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras /#instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancienthistory / #ancientrome / #ancientmithras / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #ancient / #cult / #history / #rome / #mithras / #religion / #mithras / #myths / #cautes / #and / #cautopates /
Mithras and Sol (1/4): -The acceptance of Sol; This depiction Shows the so called"Acceptance of Sol". We can see from the left to the right, Sol kneeling nacked in front of Mithras, who is Putting a phyrgian cap on Sol's head. But what would this say us? There are two known Interpretations. The first says, that Sol realize the power and strength of Mithras, and because of this he kneels down in front of him. The second one says, that Mithras puts the phyrgian cap on Sol's head, as a symbol for friendship and appreciation. (What do you think?) At myselfe I prefer the second one in fact of the other activities (which i'll explain in the next Posts), which Mithras and Sol will do together after this "Scene". ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancienthistory / #ancientrome / #ancientmithras / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #ancient / #cult / #history / #rome / #mithras / #religion / #mithras / #myths / #cautes / #and / #cautopates /

"Honor to the persians under the protection of Luna" Also the hands of the persian were cleaned with honey, like the hands of the lion. But after Porphyrius insisted a difference; "If you award the honey to the persian, you do it for his virtue, as the maintainer of the plants. The honey is here a symbol for the conservative element. In context with the mentioned mefertility, you can see the sense, which is part of the mosaic from Ostia antica. Also the so called"Akinakes", which was the Persian dagger, is placed at this mosaic. The halfmonm and the Star are symbols for the goddess Luna _________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientreligion / #ancientrome / #ancientcult / #ancienthistory / #ancientgod / #ancient / #religion / #rome / #cult / #history / #takephotos / #corax / #nymphus / #miles / #leo / #perser / #heliodromus / #pater / #sol / #and / #Luna / #cautes / #and / #cautopates
Luna: Luna had also a role in the cult of Mithras. She the goddess of the night. Maybe you had realized it on the moon, which is placed at the background. In this ancient cult we can't find her without the moon. In the roman mythology, Luna was/ is the sister of the sungod Sol. I think the mithraists had known and adopted this. Luna didn't have an important role as her brother Sol ( -I've to think this, because there are no depictions, where we can see Luna together with Mithras-). The simplest possibilty is, that Luna was used for illustrating the night. Because as we can find the differences between Cautes and Cautopates, we can find them also between Sol and Luna. Back to the facts; One of the main illustration of Luna, is thr ride in her chariot, which is pulled by oxen. "But what i want to say at the end; just because there aren't plenty informations about Luna in the cult of Mithras, i can't say surely thet se hadn't an important role." ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancientrome / #ancienthistory / #ancientreligion / #cult / #rome / #history / #religion / #ancient / #takephotos / #Sol / #and / #Luna / #cautopates / #and / #cautes

Sol in the cult of Mithras: Sol is/was an important Part of this cult. At first; We can find different representations in the rhine-donau areas. This representations are divided in the Meeting with Sol, the admittance of Sol, the cultmeal and the ride in the sun chariot (For all this representations i will make extra posts). All this shows us that Mithras and Sol should be different gods. But there are also some inscriptions in altars, which call Mithras a sun god. And also some representations on cult-reliefs are showing Mithras with a golden colored face. At all i would say (not sure) that the majority of the facts, speaks for two different gods; Mithras and Sol. Another role of Sol is the illustration with Luna on the most reliefs. Between Sol, Luna, Cautes and Cautopates accrues an X, and in the center stands Mithras killing the bull (For the illustration; Under Sol stands Cautopates with the lower torch and under Luna stands Cautes with the upper torch. And when you draw a line from Sol to Cautes and from Luna to Cautopates, you get this X). ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientrome / #ancienthistory / #ancientreligion / #ancientcult / #ancientgod / #ancient / #rome / #history / #religion / #god / #godoflight / #solinvictus / #sol / #and / #luna / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #takephotos
"Honor to the lions under the protection of Iuppiter." The lion is in the cult of Mithras from "fiery and dry Nature" (Tertullian) From the mosaic on the image, which is located in Ostia Antica, we can see that the fire-shovel is the main symbol of this rank. The other both symbols represent Iuppiter, with flash-bundl and rattle. Porphyrius wrote a lot of Things about the dedication: "If you pour honey instead of water over the hands of a becoming Lion, this mean that the hands should be sheer from everything which could bring damage and harm to the Myth. Because fire is the main element of the lion, he has to do a washing, which isn't hostile for the fire, like water. Also his tongue must be clean from all sins with honey." In the Mithraeum from Santa Prisca, a depiction was found, which shows a procession of lions, who brought their gifts to the pater. Besides stands a verse which says "Receive the incense sacrifier, Pater, receive, votary, the lions, trough these we bring the incense, through these we'll also be consumed." (Don't worry but this is Roman sacred language ; ) Maybe this Text Shows a Part of a dedication. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #ancient / #ancientrome / #ancientreligion / #ancienthistory / #ancientgod / #ancientcult / #instatravel / #rome / #ostiaantica / #history / #religion / #leo / #cautes / #and / #cautopates
🇬🇧 Around 1900, features excavated at this spot were - as we now know - incorrectly identified as a Mithraeum; as a result, the temple of Mithras was recreated. In antiquity, this god was focus of a secret religion, open only to men. Belief in redemption and resurrection played an important role. Colorful cult paintings in the cave-like interrior showed Mithras killing the bull. Pattern for the relief and inside was the Mithraeum from Nida (Frankfurt Heddernheim, Germany). Water in the cult of Mithras: Water was an important Part in the cult of Mithras. Of course you'll think, because of his exploit (the waterwonder from the Post before). But there was not Just the waterwonder. Different mithraea were found near springs. Sometimes the temple were build over a spring and used it for amazing decorations. Also Pools were a firmer Part of the mithraea. Some people say, the Pools were used for a kind of baptism, like we know from christianity (i'll speak later about Mithraism and Christianity). Not to forget is also the Illustration of the goodness oceanus. One important Point is also the jug. It's often Part of the tauroctonie. And one of the constellations, together with the dog, snake and scorpion. But this is also an other theme. As you see, water was very important in the cult of Mithras. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instagram / #ancient / #ancientcult / #ancientrome / #ancientreligion / #ancienthistory / #cult / #rome / #religion / #history / #myreligion / #myths / #sevenranks / #corax / #nymphus / #miles / #leo / #perser / #heliodromus / #pater / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #waterwonder
The waterwonder: We can find the thematic depiction of the waterwonder mainly in the Rhein and Donau areas. Usually Mithras is despicted sitting on a rock when he points his bow on a scarp. A figure sits in Front of the scarp. Sometimes a second figure kneels in front of Mithras and touches/covers his legs. Noticebale is, that both figures are dressed like Mithras. Because of this we can say, that theses are the Dadophoren Cautes & Cautopates. This speculation can be fortified with an inscription, from the Mithraeum under the Basilica Santa Prisca in Rome, which says "The twins you've fed with your nectar." The twins are Cautes & Cautopates and the nectar is the water. Why is Mithras shooting an arrow in to a scarp? He's doing this because it's one of his main duty beside the tauroctonie. With the shoot in the scarp he created a spring where the vital water comes out from ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientrome / #ancientcult / #ancientreligion / #ancienthistory / #ancientgod / #ancient / #rome / #cult / #religion / #history / #god / #persiangod / #solinvictus / #sol / #luna / #cautes / #cautopates / #corax / #nymphus / #miles / #leo / #perser / #heliodromus / #pater / #waterwonder
"Honor to the soldiers under the protection of Mars" On the mosaic from Ostia Antica we can find the main symbols of the 3'rd rank of the cult of Mithras. First we can see the soldiers sack which hangs down. The spear and the helmet represent the god of war, Mars. From Tertullian we could know something about the dedication ceremony of the 3'rd rank "Miles". He wrote in his book "Over the coronal of a soldier" about this ceremony: "They will put him a coronal with a sword over his head, but he has to take the coronal away with the words 'I need no coronal. Mithras is my coronal!' The hunt of the ursus/urbull (part 2/2): After Mithras put the bull on his back the bull was able to break away. But Mithras could hold him self on the bull's body/horns. On the image we can realize how strong the bull was. He entrained Mithras with him, this is noticebale on Mithras coat which fluttered around. After a small fight Mithras could bring the bull down. He put the bull's rear legs over his shoulders and carried him away. He brought him surely to a cave where the salutary exploit happend. We can't say if this cave was the same cave where Mithras was born. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #ancientcult / #ancient / #cult / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #ancienthistory / #religion / #romangod / #history / #takephotos / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #myreligion / #myths / #mythsofmithras
The hunt of the urus/urbull (part 1/2): Before Mithras could kill the bull, which was his main duty, he had to hunt him. This was a long fight because Mithras and the bull are/were nearly equal. The hunt starts/started with the peaceful grazing bull before Mithras is taking/took him on his back. This illustration represents the superhuman power of the god. You could find the original illustration on the cultrelief from "Heidelberg-Neunheim". ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #ancientcult / #ancient / #cult / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #ancienthistory / #religion / #romangod / #history / #takephotos / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #myreligion / #myths / #mythsofmithras
The Nymphus (groom): "Honor to the grooms under the protective of Venus!" From inscriptions we know two different designations for the second degree of ordination in the cult of Mithras. The 1'st one is "Nymphus" (groom) and the second one is "Gryphus" (the hidden one) from the 4'th century AD. On the image we can see one part of the mosaic in Ostia antica from a Mithraeum which shows us the characteristics of the Nymphus. They're including one oil lamp, a diadem and one not discernible Item. The diadem represents the goddes and planet Venus. The Lamp could represent the "new Light" because in the book of Firmicus Maternus (from the fallacy of the pagan religions) we can find one part "Hail groom, hail new light!". This could fortified the symbolik with the oil lamp. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #takephotos / #ostiaantica / #mosaic / #ancientcult / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #ancient / #cult / #religion / #god / #mithras / #phyrgiancap / #godoflight / #romangod / #ancientrome / #history / #ancienthistory

The corax (the 1/7 steps) : On the image you can see close to the raven, which was made very real, one small cup and the winged stump. The stump is the typical attribute for Merkur. A christian author from the fourth century AD writes that follower of the Mithras cult "beat their arms like birds and Imitate the voice of the raven". Maybe there were opportunitys in the cult occur's, where the myth's had woren raven masces. Cautes: He is the other of the both torchbearer. He put his torch up, with this he symbolizes the uprising sun. He's mostly located under Sol. This fortified the symbolik with the uprising sun. There are also some representations (Like reliefs) where Cautes represent the life with his upper torch. He ist the Contrast to cautopates, who represents the death. Sometimes he holds an ear in one hand. This is an important symbol because the ear incraese out of the bulls tail. _________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #instatravel / #ancientcult / #ancientreligion / #ancientgod / #cult / #religion / #god / #cautes / #and / #cautopates / #takephotos / #myreligion / #myths
🇬🇧 The rock-birth of Mithras: Mithras, who was Born on the 25'th december. He had a very special Birth. Mithras would be reborn out of the rock in a cave. He got always important things and symbols in his Life with him. Here Mithras hold the knife for the tauroctonie in his left Hand. The spread of Mithraism: On the image you can see a map of all Mithraea during the 3'rd century AD. In this time the Mithraism had his largest spread in the roman empire. The first Mithraea had benn build in Rome and Ostia. The army also helped the cult of Mithras, because the soldiers brought this cult to all the regiones where they fought. And after 300 years, people praied from britain to africa to the god Mithras. Why had benn there so much Mithraea ? Just in Rome, over 800 Mithraea had benn discovered in the last 200 years. The answer is very easy. One congregation didn't have more members than 40 peoples. If they got more the followers didn't increase their mithraeum, they build a new one. And because of this there had been so much Mithraea in the Roman world. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #takephotos / #ancientcult / #instatravel / #ancientreligion / #religion / #cult / #persiangod / #phyrgiancap / #map / #myreligion
#UruzBrotherhood #FilosofiaDelConflitto #philosophy #Nature #AgainstModernWorld #ancientcult #fighting #pagan #paganism #heathen #runes #rune #anarcha #tribe #tribeculture #tribalism #nihilism #nichilismo #Rinascita
🇬🇧 What is Mithraism?: Mithraism, also known as the Mithraic mysteries, was a mystery religion centered on the god Mithras that was practised in the Roman Empire from about the 1st to the 4th century AD. The religion was inspired by Iranian worship of the god Mithra, though the Greek Mithras was linked to a new and distinctive imagery, and the level of continuity between Persian and Greco-Roman practice is debated. The mysteries were popular in the Roman military but also in the normal classes of society. ________________________________________________ #roman_mithras / #roman / #mithras / #ancient / #god / #ancientgod / #ancientcult / #instatravel / #persiangod / #takephotos / #offering / #bull / #phyrgiancap / #tauroctonie / #ancientrelief / #religion / #ancientart / #relief / #mysticcult / #mithraismus

Uomo. Uomini.
+ No. E' oggi. Siate voi stessi come quegli uomini. Alzatevi in piedi. Dritti, come blocchi di pietra. Come menhir. + #UruzBrotherhood #AgainstModernWorld #ancientcult #fighting #FilosofiaDelConflitto #heathen #Menhir #militantstrengthculture #norse #pagan #philosophy #tradition #tribalism , #tribe #viking
🇬🇧 The mithraeum of Mundeslsheim: During waterpipe buildings, the rest of a 17,6x7,2 meters large foundation had been found in June 1989. The foundation is the rest of a Mithraeum, a temple for the roman god mithras, who originally came from persia. Such Mithraea, had been found in the whole roman empire and they were all build like a usually pattern. You could reach the mithraeum trough a stair or lower rooms, because they were mostly located under the earth. On the right and left side of the central aisle were the podiums, which you could also reach with a small stair. On this podiums the visitors had a seat. On the end of the middle aisle there was the cult image of Mithras, which is here framed by Luna and Sol (Image 2). The ceilling was curved and simply painted. Often the ceilling shows the nighttime sky (Image 3). Sempre vivo, in continuo movimento.
Ruins of the ancient Greco-roman city Heirapolis Founded by the Attalid Kings of Pergamom at the end of 2nd century BC, an earthquake destroyed it in 60 AD and rebuilt by the Romans. This Hellenistic spa town became an important religion centre for the Eastern Roman empire. The Calcite-laden waters from the hot springs, emerging from a cliff almost 200m high overlooking the plain, have created a visually stunning landscape at Pamukalle comprising of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of white terraced basins. #heirapolis #pamukkale #cottonpalace #denizli #turkey #tĂĽrkiye #ig_turkey #attalids #attaliddynasty #pergamom #ancient #ancientcult #greek #roman #hellenistic #thermalsprings #hotsprings #easternromanempire #religiouscity #thetempleofappollo #grecoroman #byzantine #architecture #archigram #tripping #yayyyy
