sunrise or sunset?? _ 02 of 03
Salk Institute for Biological Studies | San Diego, California
the 3 photos from this 'sunrise or sunset??' series were taken about 3 years ago with a mid-range 'point and shoot' camera.
at this point in my life, i didn't really understand camera settings and shot mostly in AUTO *gasp*. i didn't even have a DSLR. i didn't even shoot pictures in RAW - they were all in jpeg. *double gasp*
however, it doesn't matter to me. sure, im gonna have to go back to these spots and retake the images (i probably will eventually haha) if i want them on print; but it was during these early years when i started having fun with photography and started developing patience when trying to get a "good shot". experimenting with framing, changing 'levels'/body position, waiting for people to leave an area, etc. was all i knew how to do during my self-learning process and practices that still help me today when i shoot.
about this shot:
sunrise. i didn't know it back then, but i thought a sunrise was just a sunrise. in actuality, it can be split between what are known as the 'blue hour' and 'golden hour'; the first of these two terms is when the sun is still below the horizon and the second is when the sun has begun to rise above the horizon. im glad that i had gone to Scripps Pier (image 01 of this series) during the blue hour before this shot, because this shot just wouldn't have been the same without the glow of the sun rising.
