Redevelopment of the Sydney Masonic Centre in 1984 considered a very different tower addition to that first proposed by the original designer of the complex, Joseland and Gilling. The alternative scheme, proposed by J H Bryant and Partners, involved an oddly scaled tower and the demolition of the adjoining building - the Civic Hotel. In a surprising move, which recognised the conservation value of the street and the architectural importance of both the Masonic Centre and Civic Hotel, this scheme was not supported by the City of Sydney Council and the strategy was shelved. Images of the proposal and the streetscape at the time of the proposal are courtesy of the City of Sydney archives. #archdaily #archlover #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney
Fitzroy place with a bit of Fitzroy Gardens....Melbourne
In a recent Auditor General’s Report it was quoted (SMH Jan 3, p10) that the NSW State Government has now sold off 30,508 publicly owned properties since 2011. Such an astonishing collapse of the public realm is unfortunately still ongoing. On such example is the soon to be redeveloped, for land value only, The Endeavour Project, the community of the Waterloo Housing Estate (1976) by Stafford Moor Farmington for the NSW Housing Commission. #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney
instant architecture: on-the-spot site instruction sketch transforming a construction coordination mishap into a design opportunity
Mies van der Rohe’s 1922 pencil and charcoal sketch of an unbuilt glass and concrete office building for a site in Berlin was indeed ahead of its time. Fast forward to Sydney 45 years later to see how influential this early Modern design had become. Image 1: taken from ‘International Architektur’ (1925); Image 2: Former Bank of NSW, Woolloomooloo, NSW (1967) by Stephenson and Turner. #archdaily #archlover #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney
Advocacy which reports matters of fact: the crane marks the location of the former School of Law, Sydney (1969) by McConnel Smith and Jonhson. Sold off by the University of Sydney at a time when many Australian universities were setting up new campuses in various city centres, this building was demolished early 2018 to make way for a luxury apartment building. The second image is of the building prior to demolition. #archdaily #archlover #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney
Confirming the design for a new National Gallery of Victoria and adjacent Victorian Arts Complex for Melbourne, was a series of large format drawings and charcoal sketches submitted in a portfolio by the architect Roy Grounds in 1960. With the gallery completed in 1968, the Arts complex was redesigned and not completed until 1984. Regardless of its very different civic form and bulkier appearance, incorporating distinct concrete finishes the complex, including the earlier gallery, is still a much loved part of Melbourne. #archdaily #archlover #architecture #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #modern #Modernism #MidCentury #midcentury modern #architecture_australia #modernist #modernist_architecture #Melbourneconcrete #Melbourne

Available in Sydney by 1972, the book ‘Civilia’ (1971) presented a utopian city defined by plazas, car free streets and recreational waterways edged by brutalist megastructures. Published in London by The Architectural Press and incorporating many evocative montages, this book correlated a brutalist urban city with English Picturesque. How could the architects of Sydney, wanting new socially derived urban forms to replace a congested and polluted city, resist this utopia? #archdaily #archlover #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney

Advances in concrete technology, enabling utilitarian infrastructure projects to be built across NSW, took place well before 1960 when concrete became a popular material within many civic Sydney projects. Using slip form concrete technology are the many grain silos of country NSW (and perhaps Australia) as exemplified by Holmwood Silo, Holmwood NSW, dating to 1935. #archdaily #archlover #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #architectureaustralia #architecture_australia #Modernism #modernist_architecture #brutalism #brutalist #brutal_architecture #brutalist_architecture #brutalist_project_sydney
By the mid-1980s, the less romantic views of the City of Sydney, for example east along King Street, portrayed a city dominated by buildings in the Brutalist doctrine. This image, taken in 1985, heroically featured the former American Express Building (1976) by John Andrews International. #archdaily #archlover #archunter #architecturedetail #architecturelovers #Modernism #midcenturymodern #architecture_australia #modernist #modernist_architecture #brutal #brutalism #brutal_architecture #brutalist #brutalist_architecture #brutalistarchitecture #brutal_project_sydney #Byrea
