I always get mixed feelings when a space designed for a specific purpose is turned into a self-referential, frozen-in-time ‘monument’ in the name of its historic, architectural and artistic value.
Regardless of my personal and questionable opinion, everyone hail to Carlo Scarpa, for he was a damn brilliant creative mind, which nobody can deny 💪🏻 #1958
This incredible building just north of Hoxton Square on Pitfield Street was once the Gaumont cinema which opened in 1914 with a capacity of 866. It closed during the Blitz but re-opened in 1941. 15 years later, it was sold and in the following years housed a meat packers, delicatessen, importers and wholesalers and an artists studio. After close consultation with the local community and planners Waugh Thistleton architects helped deliver a scheme that combined reconstruction of the original 1914 Gaumont facade with the construction of a contemporary black-brick, green-roofed building. We have a 2 bedroom apartment for rent here. #londonfacades #londonproperty

Bengt Lindroos - Kvarteret Drottningen 1984-1985
Kvarteret Drottningen is an interesting example of an urban intervention in historic Södermalm and a rare case of contextual postmodernism in Stockholm. The project consists of several interventions. It is ambiguous in terms of authorship and time, often concealing the difference between old and new. For instance, the newly built red wooden house to the east, resembles vernacular houses typical of the area. Another example is the how two existing rendered brick houses, from the 18th century, are renovated and incorporated into the project as if they were designed by Lindroos himself.
The different buildings vary in height and material. Roofs are either single or double pitched and the interstitial spaces have generous yet intimate character. Some have wooden façades and others in concrete, but together they carry the same rich variation of the neighbouring houses. Instead of copying the surrounding, Lindroos extrapolates the underlying morphology of the context, and adapts it to suit contemporary building culture with both ease and with a sense of humour. In a concrete plinth one finds the imprint of two old doors. One of the faux-doors has both a handle and a plate with the architect's name inscribed on it, as if he lived in the foundation.
