Thomas’ research was conducted at the Dublin Institute of Technology, through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) funded New Paradigms / New Tools grant at Carleton University. In conjunction with the Irish Office of Public Works and the Discovery Programme Centre for Archeological Innovation in Ireland, the work included updating the HBIM model of the Leinster House (the Irish Parliament Building) and creating a virtual model of Dublin’s Historic City Centre.
The virtual smart city is a pilot project to integrate HBIM models of heritage buildings with historical maps, documentation, architectural and engineering drawings and building maintenance spread sheets. The 3D interactive virtual model of the city centre can be used for education, tourism, and construction and building management. The project will also collect and store all the required architectural, engineering, and historical information in a central database for conservators, building mangers, researchers, architects and engineers. Modelling and point cloud software used for this project include GeoMagic, Cloud Compare and Unity Engine.
😆 Time management seems a rational concept...until the moment you start studying architecture!
We have some good news though! 🎈
After years of experience, we found some time management tips and tricks that ACTUALLY WORK for architecture projects!
Would you be interested if we discuss them in future posts?
Featured in this image is a high density, aerial remote survey of a 2km² area of Dublin, Ireland. Data was obtained from 41 flight paths in the form of a 3D point-cloud and ortho-rectified 2D oblique images, collected by the School of Engineering UCD.
The ALS and imagery data are structured both by flight paths and by 500 × 500 m rectangular tiles. The ALS data consist of over 1.4 billion points.
The ALS point cloud data can be opened in Cloud Compare a free General Public Licensed Software. Here the individual point clouds can be merged, cropped, and recoloured. The scans can be exported into .txt files for meshing software's like Geomagic or Mesh-Lab or .e57 files for use in Autodesk Recap, AutoCAD, and Revit. The .txt file can be imported into Geo-Magic Wrap and transformed into a mesh. This mesh needs to be cleaned to remove noise and fill holes in the data.
Thomas used Cloud Compare to create a mesh that was used to create an accurate virtual model of the city center.
Cailen’s research focused on the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in collaboration with Gicarus Lab at Politiecnico di Milano. He consolidated Gicarus’ accumulated data of Sant’Ambrogio, which existed in the form of BIM models, photogrammetry, 360 photography, sound, and text. This content was used to develop a prototype of a ‘virtual experience’ in Unreal Engine, which could be experienced with the Oculus Rift for cultural heritage tourism. The photo above shows the BIM model of Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio with a point cloud overlay.
Cailen noted the impact of his experience, “To be able to discuss and brainstorm with people who were so knowledgeable about architectural conservation and the history of Sant’Ambrogio was very fun and inspiring. I really enjoy being able to collaborate with people who are specialists in subjects that I’m not as familiar with, it makes for an unexpected result and a very interesting process. We also spent time at the Basilica collecting data, which I think gives a special appreciation of the site compared to simply visiting it as a tourist, and we were able to see some of the restricted places.”
