The Fine Wine Business Network’s guest speaker on 19th June is Chantal Coady, who was born in Tehran and had a globetrotting childhood before moving to London.
Urgently needing to bring in money after a family tragedy, Chantal started to work in Harrods’ confectionary department. “My time at Harrods was enlightening and I had learnt a lot about selling chocolate” says Chantal, “but I knew there was room for a radically different retail approach: an indulgent, fantastical one, a chocolate paradise.” Armed with a little knowledge, and a dangerous passion for chocolate, she opened the first Rococo shop on the King’s Road in Chelsea at Easter 1983, at the age of 23.
On its busiest days Rococo would serve a thousand customers – but it took ten years to break-even.
More than three decades, five shops, and five books later (all about the joys of luxury chocolate of course) Chantal is still pioneering the movement for real chocolate.
In 2014 Chantal was awarded an OBE in the Queens Birthday Honours “For Services To Chocolate” (!) recognising her long and groundbreaking career.
Come and meet Chantal on 19th June at Minotti London and learn about her highly successful career while networking with like-minded professionals – always with a glass of fine wine in hand.

Did you know?
Each of these handwoven rattan crafts can only be made by community living close to the source of rattan, which is the jungle. Once rattan is harvested, it needs to be split and peeled immediately, or within a few days (2-3 days), before the vines become dried out and cannot be used for basketry. The most difficult process in producing a piece of rattan craft is the harvesting of it. One needs to brave the elements to harvest rattan - they have to venture into the jungle, hunt the appropriate creeping vine, harvest them by parang and then carry these vines home to be processed and then crafted. Carrying this load across mountains, hills and rivers is quite a feat. Nonetheless, the crafts give them an opportunity to earn an income and improve their quality of life. Therefore, they do what they do

On a recent photoshoot, I took the opportunity to take some close up (macro) food photography. It’s a great way to draw attention to the textures and layers of food and I think it really shows the qualities of the different elements.
