I wanted to clarify something if you are a beginner yogi. ____________________________________ HANDTSANDS are not YOGA. Practicing yoga means more than being upside down and holding an awesome shape. If you are only wanting to do handstands, yoga is not the answer. I first wanted to do handstands and thought that was yoga. The truth is that I found handstands through my practice of yoga. Once I learned many lessons on my mat and in life, that is when I held my first handstand. For me now, practicing handstands are a moving meditation. I release my stress, anger, sadness, and frustration into my handstand practice. I only bring in calm, love, happiness, release, and peace into my yoga practice. I practice yoga first and then I do my handstand practice. They are completely different practices. Yes, some yoga practices like Ashtanga yoga require handstands in your practice. But, it is never the goal. I remember Sharath Jois saying during the Miami tour that handstand is not yoga. You do not gain peace from handstand. ____________________________________ I decided to share a raw and real video of my handstand practice. It is hard, even for me, who can hold them. But guess what? I still fall a lot when I don’t remember my alignment, breathe, or think of nothing. I fall when I feel emotions. My alignment was good until I let my legs pass over my hips. Then, I began to fall out of it. And you would think I would be mad or getting frustrated here. But the truth is.... when I fall or don’t fall, I release any emotion I am feeling at that given moment. Handstands are my moving meditation. It’s something I dreamed of. So if you are a beginner, don’t quit. Practice yoga and when you are strong in mind and body? That is when handstands become a moving meditation to add onto your practice.

I did an interesting activity recently from a book I’m reading. The directions were: write down 5 words you would use to describe the world. I wrote my 5 words: Beautiful Unpredictable Trying Intimidating Wild Then, it said “these five words you have used to describe the world are actually how you see yourself” • • • This idea is interesting. We describe our own experience. Our world is so personal and these 5 words change from person to person. How do you see the world? How do you see YOU? Those words have been echoing in my mind. Beautiful, unpredictable, trying, intimidating, wild. What are your 5 words?

I never really labeled yoga as my “passion.” My partner has a clear, defined, obvious passion (🥁), but yoga isn’t like that—it’s not a skill or a career path (even though now I’m teaching), it’s always been a practice and not always one I’ve been great at doing regularly. The concept of teaching such a spiritual practice at a gym has me feeling iffy and uncertain about how I’m misrepresenting an ancient cultural practice. It has Hindu roots and it’s all about connecting to this universal “oneness,” but I’m rambling and what I’m really trying to say is that I feel like we should “om” more and I’m just confident to start the “om” . . Now multiple that max heart rate by the intensity range that is appropriate for you: light (0.30-0.39), moderate (0.40-0.59), vigorous (0.60-0.80). This will give you a range of what your heart rate should be for that intensity of exercise! Did you try it?
