“If there is a sound, we hear. If our eyes are open, we see. There is nothing more than this.” ~ Unknown
Susan Sontag (1933-2004) was a philosopher, poet, filmmaker and literary theorist of a postmodernist persuasion (one of many who get tagged with the label even though their ideas are never self-described as such). Her work introduced me to #postmodernism
. It appealed to me as an undergraduate because it is interdisciplinary and disrupts the cultural boundaries between low and high art.
Sontag’s book Against Interpretation has both an intellectual and personal significance to me. Although I no longer ascribe to it, I genuinely respect its premise and believe it reveals a Zen-like mask of similarities between postmodernism and #positivism
. Meaning and knowledge prove highly abstract and metaphysical, unknowable and untenable to each. There is nothing to be inferred beyond the deductive propositions of logic and mathematics for the positivist. No meaning exists greater than the feel and sensuous experience of art to the postmodernist.
