Do you feel like there's no escape from those stomach cramps, those moments of stopping whatever your doing and running to the loo, those moments of OMG where is the closest toilet? 💩💩💩 - I totally get it! I was there for most my adult life, I thought I had to accept it. There were many times after I had eaten in a restaurant I couldn't leave because I knew I needed to be close to a toilet. I have had the embarrassment of running off to get to the toilet, the desperation of not wanting to go in a public toilet, the pain which cripples u like no other. The bloatedness, the tiredness after eating, the anxiety.... seriously that was my life. I would just eat what i wanted and then i had consequences after! - I used to make it all into a joke because that was how I managed my embarrassment when really I was trying to hide the pain, the worry and embarrassment of what was going on! - Let me tell you straight one thing I have learnt big style over the past 2 years......you eat 💩, you will feel 💩, you will think 💩 and overall life will seem really 💩......BUT that's not how it has to be! - Don't get me wrong I still eat 💩 sometimes, I still eat What I want in a restaurant on a rare occasion and the other day after a lovely meal all these old feelings and emotions came back to me! - Relate? December 1- 7 is Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week😀 __ 🌿In honor of that I wanted to present some data that was recently published in October looking at Cannabis for Crohn’s disease __ 🌿The researchers studied 46 patients with moderately severe Chrohn’s for 8 weeks, either receiving cannnabis oil or placebo __ 🌿Results showed a significant reduction in Crohn's disease symptoms in the cannabis oil group compared to placebo __ 🌿Also, 65% of the cannabis oil group met "strict criteria for clinical remission" of Crohn's disease, compared with only 35 percent of the placebo group __ 🌿The group that received the cannabis oil also showed meaningful improvements in measures of life quality, compared with placebo __ 🌿What’s interesting is that the beneficial effect of cannabis on Crohn's disease was not the result of alleviating the gut inflammation that characterizes the condition. __ 🌿People have used cannabis, or marijuana, for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. __ 🌿The plant contains chemicals called cannabinoids that have specific effects in different parts of the body, including the immune system, the brain, and the rest of the central nervous system. __ 🌿We know that cannabinoids can have profound anti-inflammatory effects, but this study indicates that the improvement in symptoms may NOT be related to these anti-inflammatory properties __ ✨What are your thoughts or experiences? Researchers have long suspected that the benefits of exercise extend down to the cellular level, but know relatively little about which exercises help cells rebuild key organelles that deteriorate with aging. __ ✴️A new study found that exercise -- and in particular high-intensity interval training HIIT in aerobic exercises such as biking and walking -- caused cells to make more proteins for their energy-producing mitochondria and their protein-building ribosomes, effectively stopping aging at the cellular level. __ ✴️There's no substitute for these exercise programs when it comes to delaying the aging process, these findings cannot be done by any medicine __ ✴️Volunteers who were 18-30 years old and "older" volunteers who were 65-80 years old broke into different exercise programs: one where the volunteers did high-intensity interval biking and one where the volunteers did strength training with weights __ ✴️They found that while strength training was effective at building muscle mass, high-intensity interval training yielded the biggest benefits at the cellular level __ ✴️The younger volunteers in the interval training group saw a 49% increase in mitochondrial capacity, and the older volunteers saw an even more dramatic 69% increase __ ✴️As we age, the energy-generating capacity of our cells' mitochondria slowly decreases __ ✴️Exercise also appeared to boost the ribosomes' ability to build mitochondrial proteins. The most impressive finding was the increase in muscle protein content. Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) is characterized with intestinal and extra intestinal symptoms arising from gluten ingestion and rapidly improving after its withdrawal from the diet. __ 🔸The pathogenesis of NCGS is largely unknown but factors such as stimulation of the innate immune system, the direct cytotoxic effect of gluten, and probably the synergy with other wheat molecules. __ 🔸The effects of gluten on intestinal permeability in both celiac disease and non-celiac individuals is a topic that is widely discussed __ 🔸Gliadin is the toxic, immunogenic component of gluten and is mediated by T cell activation __ 🔸One study looked at the effects of gliadin on the intestinal biopsies of those with active celiac disease, celiac disease in remission, non-celiac individuals with gluten sensitivity and a non-celiac control group __ 🔸This study found that intestinal permeability had increased in all 4 groups when exposed to gliadin __ 🔸The increase in intestinal permeability noted above occurs due to an increase in zonulin release which can be induced by exposure to gliadin. The one result I want to focus on today is .... 🌿S E L E N I U M 🌿 __ 🔸In adults, the thyroid is the organ with the highest amount of selenium per gram of tissue. __ 🔸In the thyroid, selenium is required for the antioxidant function and for the metabolism of thyroid hormones __ 🔸The literature suggests that selenium supplementation of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis is associated with a reduction in TPO antibody levels, improved thyroid ultrasound features, and improved quality of life.  __ 🔸Selenium deficiency decreases the synthesis of thyroid hormones, as it decreases the function of selenoproteins, in particular iodothyronine deiodinases (DIOs), which are responsible for the conversion of T4 to T3 (the active hormone) __ 🔸One study looked at 2 groups, one supplemented with 200 mcg sodium selenite and the other group just on levothyroxine. TPOAb decreased by 40% in the group treated with selenium (versus 10% in the placebo group) __ 🛑Before you supplement- check your levels!!🛑 __ 🔸Some trials show that there is a U-shaped relationship between selenium in the blood and the risk of disease, with possible harm occurring both below and above the physiological range __ 🔸🔸Therefore, supplementation should be recommended to patients with low levels of selenium, but high selenium intake in individuals without proved deficit may have important adverse effects such as hyperglycaemia and atherosclerosis __ Now that I’ve checked my levels, I plan on supplementing selenium to seek an optimal range! __ 🔸Iodine: increased consumption can act as a trigger for thyroiditis. Iodine may also have a direct toxic effect on thyroid via free oxygen radicals and immune stimulation __ 🔹Dietary Fat: Dietary fat composition influences TSH secretion, thyroid peroxidase activity, hepatic deiodinase activities and T3 binding to nuclear receptors. In a study conducted on male Wistar rats, total and free thyroxine levels were found to be higher in saturated fat fed group than others. Further TPO levels were reported to decrease in rats fed polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) and increased in rats fed on monounsaturated fats. __ 🔸Green Tea: Thyroid function can be impaired by green tea extracts at high doses. A significant decrease in serum T3 and T4 and increase in TSH levels has been reported in response to dietary green tea extract in rats __ 🔹Soy and Soybean Product: A review of 14 trials concluded that although soy protein and isoflavones may interfere with absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone increasing the dose of medication in hypothyroid patients. Soybean product seem to contain goitrogenic which can reduce T4 absorption and interfere with thyroid hormone increasing autoimmune thyroid disease. __ 🔸Cyanogenic Plant Foods: Goitrin is an active goitrogen present in plants of Rutabaga, turnip and Brassicae seeds. The Art of Invisibility. Sometimes I giggle when I hear references to having an invisible illness. I mean I even use the reference myself, at times. But of course there are a multitude of meanings given the number of #autoimmune illnesses alone. . I came across an old photo (the peach tee one ... ha! peach tee! you giggled, admit it😏.) And then I looked back at a photo taken just a few months ago. Seeing the two photos together somehow don’t seem so invisible to me, and honestly not even all that different. . I guess I see everything when I look at the photos. I see the effects of medication, good and bad; I see the impact of the illnesses, minor and major; And I suppose most importantly, to me anyway, is that no matter how rough this ride has been, I see that it hasn’t made my joy invisible. . So today I got asked on my IG story what am I struggling with most right now.... And the reality is.... My body image issues....... - For years I have had insecurities and criticism about myself and how I look. And if I am truthful I work dam hard to manage those thoughts each and everyday. Some days are better than others. - I still catch myself criticizing myself when I look in the mirror, saying your hips are too big, I look fat, I have 2 much back fat, thighs look huge .........and then when I realise what I am doing I put it into reality. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) occurs in people with psoriasis and causes painful inflammation of the joints. In people with celiac disease (CD), eating foods that contain gluten can trigger a range of digestive symptoms, including diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. __ ✅Studies have found a strong link between CD and psoriatic conditions. __ ✅A 2011 Swedish study of people with CD found that 42 percent of psoriasis symptoms may be the result of the underlying CD __ ✅According to a 2014 review, some research suggests that people with psoriatic conditions are more likely have CD antibodies, such as antigliadin antibodies, in their blood. Are you familiar with the complexities of the immune system? Specifically T-cells? _ ✳️T cells are like special agents, and they are divided into two groups : the special agents that help to activate the immune system called CD4 T helper cells and the special agents that help kill infected cells named CD8 killer cells. _ ✳️The group of CD4 cells are divided into several subgroups depending on their weapons (cytokines they produce and their targets). The most important are Th1 that fights bacteria and virus and Th2 that fight worms and allergies.  __ ✳️Our body is always trying to maintain the perfect balance between Th1 and Th2. __ ✳️Th1 response is more pro-inflammatory, while Th2 response is anti-inflammatory.  Without this balance in our bodies we may develop autoimmunity (Th1 is out of hand) or allergies and asthma (Th2 is out of hand) ___ ✳️Several mechanisms are available to balance Th1/Th2 and that’s by increasing T-Regulatory cells through FOOD— to name a few: 1️⃣Bifidobacterium Probiotics 2️⃣Vitamin D 3️⃣Green tea (EGCG) 4️⃣Cinnamon __ ✅My takeaway: I have an autoimmune disease but it seems to be controlled since making some changes but my allergies are OUT OF CONTROL. So I always say diets are not One Size Fits All, but it’s good to be aware of all the different options… __ So have you heard of FODMAP⁉️ __ ✳️Low FODMAP (Fermentable Oligo-Saccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols) diet builds further on the strategy of excluding poorly absorbed fermentable carbohydrates in an attempt to improve IBS symptoms. __ ✳️The low FODMAP diet specifically limits the intake of poorly absorbed short chain carbohydrates which would induce luminal distension by promoting osmosis and colonic gas production. __ ✳️FODMAPs include fructans (many vegetables, wheat, barley, rye), galactans (beans/pulses), polyols (found in many fruits) lactose, fructose and many artificial sweeteners. Increasing the dietary intake of FODMAPs worsens IBS symptoms. __ ✅Takeaway: Controlled trials have now shown that IBS symptoms can be improved by following a low FODMAP diet.
