🇺🇸 🌴 Island life for Pacific aircrews. The tiny atoll of Funafuti, located halfway between Hawaii and Australia, was a jumping off point for B-24 Liberators charged with hitting Japanese targets in the far-flung Central Pacific. We’ve talked about how small and unaccommodating some of these atolls were and this is visual evidence of that. Without adequate staging areas these Liberators are warming up their motors on the beach with the sand and surf clearly visible behind them. They are part of the initial phase of Operation Galvanic, the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, and are about to takeoff and hit targets on Tarawa. (📸: NARA)
ELCAP is a waypoint I enter in every time I fly into OAK, SJC, or SFO. It never disappoints.
