Welcome to Grand Theft Auto - Fiji... #Bula
The more you travel in the East, the more you get used to crazy bus drivers - flying down tiny roads at incredible speeds, overtaking on blind corners, F1 style braking on hairpin turns, driving on the other side of the road for absolutely no reason etc. etc. But this was certainly a first for us... Then we got to Fiji and everything seemed to be ‘normal’... Western you could even say!! Wide, marked roads, roads signs that were obeyed, a distinct lack of horning, and calm driving. After all, its Fiji!! Everyone’s calm, relaxed, happy, chilled out and in no rush.
So after telling the bus driver we wanted to go to Wailoaloa Beach and confirmed that he was headed there, we got on and enjoyed the breeze through the open bus as we left Nadi Town.
Then our seemingly ‘normal’ bus ride turned into a scene from a video game when our bus driver turned off a tarmac road to drive down this quiet little beach (maybe this is a shortcut, maybe not), it reminded us that there is no such thing as ‘normal’!! Whether or not this was a moment of madness from the bus driver (although judging by the tyre tracks on the beach, he’s either not alone or he enjoys this route), or God feeling a bit childish and having a bit of fun with us, we’ll never know. But what’s (almost) certain, is that next time we ask to be dropped off at the beach, the driver won’t take it literally!!
