Having a hard time learning to hip hinge? When patients struggle learning the hip hinge in the clinic, this is the system of modifications I use to correct the pattern. ————————————————— 1. Hip hinge against a chair- most people struggle with the hinge because they don’t know how to posteriorly weight shift. The chair forces them to. 2. Tall kneeling hip hinge- if patients still can’t get it, I will eliminate body parts from the equation i.e. the knee and foot and make the exercise simpler. 3. Quadruped hip hinge- finally, if they’re still struggling I will put them in quadruped to reduce the stability requirement. You will know if you have pain on your lower right side, leaning away from your right side or if you are avoiding putting pressure on your right side. 1. Lean against the wall on your left side putting pressure through your shoulder and elbow, with your feet together and away from the wall 2. Place your other hand on your right hip and glide your hip closer to the wall so that your pain centralizes and range increases. Do not push past the point where the pain shoots down your leg. Perform 10-15 reps trying to get closer to the wall every hour 3. If this is uncomfortable, lean slightly forward but still maintaining neutral spine and try again until you are able to do this standing fully upright 4. Once done bring your inside foot closer to the wall and use your elbow and legs to help stand upright 5. Keep your hand on your hip for a couple minutes after for feedback to encourage the new position 6. Do this every hour until you are no longer limping or standing with a crooked back 7. Call your doctor immediately if pain is going further down your leg or worsening even when you try to modify

I’ve dealt with back pain for years but since I’ve gone through physical therapy it feels almost 100% better and stronger. The point is to work the stabilizer muscles which are small muscles that run up and down your back. Otherwise the larger muscles will overwork causing back pain. Do your daily exercises.

As a spine doctor, I get this question often from many of my patients. This is a great explanation by @squat_university and pretty much summarizes my conversations with athletes. ・・・ A weightlifting belt can be an extremely helpful tool for the strength athlete. When it comes to lifting heavy weight, research has shown that athletes who wear a belt correctly tend to lift heavier weights with more explosive power.✅ . In fact, research has shown IAP (Intra-abdominal pressure) values can increase anywhere from 20-40% when wearing a belt during a heavy squat - which means more core stiffness!✅ . That being said, a weight belt is NOT designed to decrease or fix your back pain. Most people develop back pain when lifting due to poor movement quality & an inability to use their own “natural weightlifting belt” through proper core stability. Putting on a belt when you have back pain is like putting a band-aid on the problem - it does NOT address WHY you have developed the pain. While our society preaches and tries to sell you on short term fixes for your problems- I’m here to tell you that is NOT how to find real lasting results. This is one of the more common questions I get from patients. Sometimes patients say the herniation was found 20+ years ago, and they still worry about. While there is a lot that goes into this question, two things I usually mention are that disc herniations are common in much of the asymptomatic population and that they can heal with time and conservative treatment. . The following is a case report from the New England Journal of Medicine that documents the resolution of a lumbar herniation without surgery. 📕A 29-year-old woman presented to the spine clinic with new-onset pain in her right leg, accompanied by paresthesia. MRI of the lumbar spine revealed a lumbar disc herniation resulting in substantial spinal stenosis and nerve-root compression (first image). 📕She elected conservative treatment with physical therapy and an epidural injection of glucocorticoids. A second MRI obtained at follow-up 5 months after presentation showed resolution of the herniation (second image). Her clinical symptoms resolved, and she was discharged from the clinic. Data from clinical trials suggest that patients who have herniated lumbar discs have similar long-term outcomes whether they undergo surgery or elect conservative treatment. . . 🔥Tight hips? 💥Low back pain? After you’ve done your self test (see previous video) here is one variation to the front thigh stretch (quad & hip flexors). How can these cause low back pain? Our Psoas muscle attaches from our low back to our upper thigh bone, and get tight from sitting all day, travel in air planes or cars, from an intense workout without cooling down etc. Which can compress our low back and also pull us into lordosis (arched low back). Give them some love of this is you! Pay attention to how this is done, as most often I see this being done wrong and actually contributing to your low back pain. . Lunge position with front knee stacked over ankle at 90 degrees & back knee supported under hip 2. The whole motion is done with the pelvis, not leaning forward: Tuck your tail bone (aka posterior pelvic tilt) and squeeze your same side buttcheek 3.
