After three days of carrying this in his backpack, my son tells me, ‘Oh yeah, I thought you’d want to scrapbook this or something. I was going to throw it out”. It must be nice to be so confident in your ability that receiving an award is just one more thing. We were invited to the awards ceremony, but my son didn’t want to spend three hours sitting in a gym. As someone who never attended any of her university convocations, I couldn’t argue with him.
I can tell you - I never received any athletic awards of excellence in high school. I couldn’t wait to get to Grade 11 and drop P.E.
My son and I have different passions. He spends his high school days taking his core classes, sports medicine, sports performance, and working out in the weight room - then having 2 hours of football practice every night.
Me, I spent those years in concert band, jazz band, show choir, jazz choir, and playing for the city concert band.
My son can’t play a single note any any instrument. I can barely throw a football. I guess, in some ways, we’re made for each other.
Oh, and he’s right...I do want to scrapbook this for him.
