I did 3 Barre classes this week (hopefully can squeeze in a 4th in between clients later) and I am feeling all sorts of good!! And to make things even better, I realized I had a FREE bagel reward at @Panerabread , which came at the most perfect time!! With only 12 days left till Christmas, my instagram feed is FILLED with holiday recipes, fitness challenges and lots of festivities. The other day I made some goals for 2019 - some business and professionally oriented, and some personal. I want to start working out in the morning, as opposed to the evening and I want to start my morning meditation again (I was really good over the summer, but stopped when I came back to New York). I really want to shift my morning routine to help with my concentration throughout the day . . I decided to start today and not wait until January 1st. You can implement new goals at any time, and in my opinion, if you want to make a change, why wait? Today I started my day with a 3 minute meditation from @headspace (starting small) and a quick cardio/stretch session in the gym ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป and then had this incredible breakfast ๐Ÿ˜ feeling focused and ready for a busy day of clients ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ . . Happy Wednesday friends ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป I had 2 polls running on my stories, 1 for this Thai green curry recipe and 1 for tips on keeping a mindful eating food journal - both of which you guys voted YES for ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ so, unfortunately, I donโ€™t have this recipe just yet (need to test it another time), but I DO have my tips for keeping a food journal. You can find it on the link in my bio, scroll to the bottom and click to download ๐Ÿค“ but I just wanted to discuss a few more things on food journals... 1. Like I said in my stories, keeping a food journal is NOT for everyone. Especially if you have a history of extreme restriction 2. Focusing on foods eaten, hunger levels, satisfaction, emotions, time, and physical symptoms are far more important than tracking calories and macros 3. This is a way to connect your food choices/lifestyle to feelings, such as stress or anxiety. You can also see how your food choices/times affect your sleep or digestive issues. But you can also see what time of the day you are your hungriest, and what types of food make you feel your best ๐ŸŒฑ itโ€™s important to know that everyone is different and this exercise can be helpful to connect with your body. This exercise is not weight focused. ๐ŸŒฑ again, this would not be helpful for someone to do on their own if they struggle with disordered eating, and should be done with a dietitian or psychologist for proper support!

I spent this morning mapping out my to do list for the week and organizing my client schedule because I have lots of meetings and events on since Iโ€™m back in New York! Headed out to my first meeting with a lovely Eating Disorder Psychologist. As I work with many clients recovering from eating disorders or exhibit sign of disordered eating, I always make sure I can refer them to a specialist psychiatrist if need be. Happy Monday babes! When I scrolled through Instagram this morning, the first post I read was about โ€œgetting back on track.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ so, naturally, I thought I would share my thoughts about said phrase ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ . . โ€œGetting back on trackโ€ implies a few things: first, it applies that you have been โ€œoff trackโ€ - meaning that the food choices and lifestyle youโ€™ve been living are not good enough. Second, it implies that you should feel so guilty and bad about the choices you have made while โ€œoff trackโ€, you need to make some radical changes to be โ€œbetterโ€. Third, it implies you must cut out some thing from your routine (i.e bread or cheese) or implement strict rules (i.e must skip breakfast) to get โ€œon trackโ€. Next, it implies that when you are โ€œonโ€ track, you are inherently โ€œbetterโ€, or even a โ€œbetter personโ€ (which is so NOT true). And last, it implies that when you fall of track again, which may be eating a slice of toast, that you have broken the rules and are therefore โ€œbadโ€, which creates guilt. . . Often enough I hear from my clients the stories that involve breaking a single rule, which causes you to throw in the towel and say โ€œIโ€™ve already ruined my diet, so I might as well have โ€œthisโ€.....โ€, which inevitably sends them in a binge, followed by feeling guilty, followed by a vow to โ€œget back on track tomorrowโ€ ๐Ÿ™ˆ . . So moral of the story, there is no track. Healthy lifestyle changes are not black and white, there is no such thing as โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbadโ€ and you should feel guilty in regards to food! You are not a bad person for having chocolate, nor are you a good person for having kale. Strict rules create restrictions, which are usually followed by a binge. Itโ€™s important to separate THOUGHTS from FACTS ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป . . I could talk about this for hours but I think this rant is done for now - a bit heavy for a Monday morning ๐Ÿ˜‚

I encourage my clients, friends and family to increase their plant based meals for the environment and their health! . . My friend @sophieshealthykitchen recently posted about a study stating that we could decrease our carbon footprint by 22% if total daily meet consumption is reduced to 50-99g/day! . . So, you donโ€™t have to become a vegetarian, but making an effort to reduce your overall meat consumption can really lower the environmental impact! NEW PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES were released from the US department of health and human services and I am LOVING the message ๐Ÿ˜ . These new guidelines highlight the importance of adding additional movement into your days, in any form! They stress โ€œmove more, sit lessโ€, which I really think sounds a lot less daunting than โ€œat least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activityโ€. These new guidelines are also highlighting the benefits of physical activity besides weight and physical health, such as cognition, sleep and mental health ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป . While the overall guidelines remain the same, the rhetoric is much more approachable ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป . The โ€œsome is better than noneโ€ approach these guidelines use is the same logic I use in my practice! I think itโ€™s so important to meet my clients where they are at. If I have a client who eats very little vegetables, it is unrealistic to recommend 5 servings a day! How do you start your day? Personally, I HATE starting my day off feeling rushed. New recipe alert!!! Tofu Buddha bowl with a tahini and soy dressing ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿปโค๏ธ the best part is that the dressing also doubles as the marinade for the tofu - SO EASY! I used Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Spain as the base for the dressing because it was such a mild and smooth tasting oil. Kicking off Monday with one of my favorite breakfast - avocado toast with hummus, 1 scrambled egg, arugula and feta ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿณ should have probably waiting until tomorrow to post this for toast Tuesday but I ainโ€™t letting Instagram dictate when and what I eat or post ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ #barithedietitian . . While on the subject of not letting others dictate what and when to eat, I wanted to quickly talk about one of the most common misconceptions I hear from clients: PROTEIN! Many of my clients (and friends, and family members), think they need to take protein supplements (shakes) after they work out for muscle repair. THIS IS TRUE - protein is necessary for muscle repair and growth but you DO NOT always need to supplement. Most people need .8g protein/kg (roughly 48g for women and 65g for men), and if you exercise for more than an hour each day, upwards of 1.2-1.4g/kg (anything approaching 2g is excessive). This can EASILY be achieved through REAL food - not expensive powders. However, powders are great for quick, on the go, sources of protein, but always prioritize food first (you get lots of other nutrients this way). Plus, excess protein can be stored as fat and excess amino acids are lost through urine (which often bind to calcium and can contribute to a decrease in bone density). I promised you guys an update of my alopecia with pictures, so here it is ๐Ÿ™ˆ I was very lucky that my bald spot was on the back of my head and easily covered - looking perfectly normal to anyone who didnโ€™t know it was there. Which, is literally the most perfect representation of the stress/anxiety I was feeling. Calm, cool and collected on the outside, yet feeling the exact opposite on the inside. ๐Ÿ˜ as the bald spot got bigger, I was most petrified that I was increasingly anxious over it, thus only contributing to my worries, and making the spot bigger. I thought it was an endless cycle ๐Ÿ™ˆ but hereโ€™s what I did to deal with my hair loss/stress 1. Cut 8 inches off my hair. I wanted to relieve some of the pressure of my scalp 2. Switched shampoos and conditioner to be free of sulfates and harmful chemicals 3. Started practicing more mindfulness in the mornings 4. Cancelled my gym membership. I was doing very high intensity training, which I felt was contributing to my high cortisol levels (stress hormone), which was already clearly elevated. Instead I enjoyed daily dog walks with Oscar + podcasts 5. I started to read non nutrition books. As a dietitian, there is always something new to learn, and sometimes it can be overwhelming. I used to feel pressure to always learn something new. But now Iโ€™m reading fiction and I love it, itโ€™s so relaxing ! 6. Coconut oil head massages, which help increase the blood flow to the affected area and bring fresh oxygen to the cells for growth 7. And most importantly, I finally cut myself some slack ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป this was a lot harder than it sounds, but it was extremely powerful, but also something I am still working on today Please share with someone you may know going through the same thing - the hair growth CAN be restored ! We actually absorb most of our vitamin D from the sun! However, as the days start to get shorter and our time spent in direct sunlight decreases as we approach winter, itโ€™s really important to make sure your vitamin D levels donโ€™t drop. Its important for bone health and aids in absorption of calcium and phosphorus. But itโ€™s also important for our muscle functions and immune system (hmmmm could a vitamin D deficiency in the winter contribute to an increased risk of catching a cold?) anyways, depending on where you live and your access to direct sun, I would highly recommend considering a vitamin D supplement (D3), but you may wish to check with your doctor first to get your levels tested, or talk to your dietitian! Kimchi Fried Rice is my new obsession๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป hereโ€™s the recipe (so quick and delicious): Serves 2 โ€ข2 cups brown rice โ€ขthumb size of fresh ginger, minced โ€ข1 cup white onion โ€ข2 cups spinach โ€ข1 cup kimchi โ€ข1 tbs low sodium soy sauce โ€ข1/4 cup cilantro, chopped โ€ขprotein of choice: I added shrimp โ€ข1 tbs olive oil Directions: heat a nonstick skillet on medium heat and sautรฉ onion and ginger. When onions are transparent, add brown rice, kimchi and soy sauce. Mix well and add spinach and cooked shrimp. Serve with fresh cilantro and avocado! . . I have taken this morning/afternoon off to have lunch with my grandma and I couldnโ€™t be happier! Headed out to my first meeting with a lovely Eating Disorder Psychologist. As I work with many clients recovering from eating disorders or exhibit sign of disordered eating, I always make sure I can refer them to a specialist psychiatrist if need be. Pre-Flight Chocolate and Banana Overnight Oats ๐Ÿซ๐ŸŒ packed this brekkie for the journey to the airport - saves me from having to make an expensive purchase in the airport, waste the single use packaging, and ensure I get a tasty and healthy meal! . Vegan Overnight Oat Ingredients: 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup @alpro unsweetened almond milk 1 Tbs cacao powder 1 Tbs flax seed 1 tsp chia seed Dash on vanilla extract Topped with soya unsweetened yoghurt and fresh bananas . I love using the alpro unsweetened products because they donโ€™t substitute with sugar alcohols or sweetness, both of which are known to cause digestive issues + they fortify their milks with plenty of vitamins/minerals (specifically b12) . I think itโ€™s great that @alpro is trying to educate everyone about added sugars. Added sugars are those added to foods or beverages when they are processed or prepared, not including the natural sugar found in fruit! Even that โ€œunrefinedโ€ maple syrup is considered an added sugar! . Sugar is not the devil and can be enjoyed in moderation. However, we do need to be mindful of the quantity and quality of the sugar that we consume on a daily basis. The literature does show an increase in cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic disease and visceral fat with excess consumption of added sugars .
