Kicking off the 2nd week of our "Top 10 Best Parks of Africa" weekly feature is the magnificent, but daunting, #5
: Central Kalahari Game Reserve or CKGR, in central 🇧🇼 Botswana.
The home of countless NatGeo Africa films, CKGR is one of those places where, if you're going to have something go wrong - it'll probably be here. Why? It's HUGE, is a full day's drive from the nearest fuel station, covers most of the Kalahari sandy country & due to its size is somewhere you don't often come across other safari-goers. I was warned not to go to CKGR alone, but tempted fate & checked it out... & survived, though did run out of fuel 2km short of the nearest station on leaving day.
I saw several big cats in the first 24 hours on-Park, though on my 2nd day heavy thunderstorms rolled in & stayed over me for the week. I camped at Pokoje Pan campsite for 4 nights, & in that time didn't see another human... Lions called every night, nearby, though I never saw one. I started making friends with passing Gemsbok & cheery Larks, & went on daily missions to save rain-emerging Giant African Bullfrogs from marauding Marabou Storks (just giving them time to lay eggs, anyway). Despite the rain, I had an incredible time there. Thus my recommendation to add this to the top of your Africa-must-see list 😄
