When I was 10, an aunt gave me a few off-cut pieces of fabric. They were red and blue pieces of georgette and I decided to make a long skirt with the red and blue panels and a matching top. With no sewing or design knowledge or experience, the outfit was TRULY horrendous.
Not only was it painfully clear that it was homemade, it was clear that it was made by a child who didn't know what she was doing.
The cherry on top: I was incredibly proud of it and being the awkward child that I was, I decided to wear it to school on a day when I was required to walk on stage and be seen by 600 older kids.
I also made it my mission of the day to tell everyone that I made it myself.
I could just cringe whenever I recall that memory but the sense of pride that I felt is heartwarming, even today. Fast forward 14 years, my love for turning a piece of cloth into a garment that makes a woman feel beautiful and special has only grown stronger and stronger.
The best part of this creative process is seeing women admire themselves in their custom-made dresses. Or the first look when people see her in that dress and they cannot take their eyes off of her. It had been my calling in life, therapy, cure to boredom and pain and it is what renews my energy every single day.
I hope that you have something in your life that sets your heart on fire too. If you are willing to share, let me know what your passions are in a comment below.
