This new season of life I just stepped into has been directing my gaze forward more than before. I’ve been making decisions that affect the next 10 years rather than the next month. The next 3 decades rather than the next few days. It’s been affecting every area of my life: daily spending choices, shoots I accept or decline, relationships I invest in or move on from. The tides of life ebb and flow and the things I once thought were lust-worthy suddenly appear tarnished. I read this passage the other day in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and it’s responsible for synthesizing this paradigm shift… and post. —
“I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be your affectionate father.” —
This notion of leaving things for future people. My future wife, future kids, future grandchildren. The choices I’m making today will be some of the most consequential of my life. It’s a heavy thought but not one to turn and run from. I was talking to Megan earlier today and she brought up the concept of this being the Third Third; meaning that this is my third 1/3 of life, often cited as the most important in terms of setting the trajectory of your life. The first third was 0-10ish, the second being 10ish-20ish, and the third being this 20ish-30ish. It’s too late for a New Years theme (those who’ve followed me for a bit know my opinion on resolutions), but it’s not too late to become more intentional about choices made now in this Third Third. —
