Wow. Belgian National Day was already a week ago! I am one of those Americans who always says: let me just check my email; let me just answer a couple of emails; just another half an hour or two—or three--and I’ll be done. And then, what do you know, it’s a week later. Now, I’ll be catching up with all the special Drinkstagram days that I missed, in random order.
Here’s a story about a lovely Belgian whom I once met: Diane von Fürstenberg, the gal about town and clothing designer who partied with Jagger and Warhol at Studio 54 and created the wrap dress, of which I have a knockoff, obtained at the 50% off rack at Banana Republic.
So, I was in New York City on business a few years ago with my boss and a colleague on a post-meeting pit stop at the posh Saks Fifth Avenue, when lo and behold, Ms. von Fürstenberg was there for a book signing. So, we went to say hi because we were—and still are—some badass b**tches.
I’ll skip to the best part: she asked me if I was a model. A model! And, not a model for textbooks or cat food or nasal spray! Because she’s in fashion, she meant a real-life model.
Some caveats: this was back in the day when I used to prance around in very high heels like they were sneakers, so I looked hella tall. I was also clad in my finest non-mall-purchased suit and was 15 years younger. Although not “young”, my post-adolescent, pre-middle age acne made me look youthful--like the infamous 30-something woman who passed for 19 and got a gig writing about life as a college student for the TV show “Felicity.” And, it’s certainly possible that Ms. von Fürstenberg did not have 20/20 vision.
Anyway, that was a *major* compliment. I believe I answered: wow [sputter sputter] ummm, errrrrrr, no, but thank you!
Another caveat: her next statement—had I given her the option—may have been: if you are a model, it’s time to retire and get a nice office job.
This cocktail has nothing to do with Belgium, but I drank it last week during the weekend happy hour at Cheu Fishtown. And, yes, I had another.
Happy belated Belgian National Day @servedbysoberon
