This Friday I will be hosting a special #wintersolstice #ecstatic
dance and candlelight ritual. All are welcome. It’s $20. Cheaper with friends. If you don’t have it, come anyways. Sign up in the link in profile!
Why ecstatic dance? Aren’t you a therapist? Yoga, meditation and mysticism teacher? Where does this fit in?
Good question. Being a professional ecstatic dance facilitator has little to nothing to do with my career hopes or trajectory. I have ample experience. But I don’t have a dance therapist or #5rhythmsdance
training as you might typically find with this offering. Yet I find this simple Friday night offering brings me and the people who show up endless freedom, clarity, release and joy. And because I have no need or striving for it to “go anywhere”, for me, it’s just bliss. So it feels important to keep inviting people into this bliss with me.
Professionally and personally, the connection between the body, mind and spirit is of infinite fascination to me. And what I’ve learned and experienced is that with certain emotions, no amount of “talking” or “expressing your feelings” is going to fully “get it out.” You’ve got to move! Walk, yoga, dance, throw stuff, kickbox. Just move!
The most magical part of ecstatic dance is that what this “moving” looks like is completely different for each person. Lights out. The music enters the body as the mind steps aside and the instrument which is each individual embodied soul is played in its own perfect way. Some folks are hand drums and sit and bop their heads. Others are electric guitars and jump up and down with fervor. Other than respecting people’s personal physical boundaries, there are no rules. You don’t have to “know how to dance.” I don’t.
And of course it can take some time to get comfortable when you’ve lived you’re life with body and/or movement shame. But, in time, it happens. You let go.
No matter what your spiritual leaning is, this is a supremely holy time of year and this is a holy practice. Let’s celebrate the the gift of our own humanity together!
