2 years ago today I started this fitness and weight loss journey... I checked my notes - barely 2.1 miles covered in 40 minutes (slowly) walking on the treadmill. I was sore, tired, out of breath, and on the verge of tears. But I stuck it out and here I am 12 marathons and countless other races later... #throwbackthursday
to some of the highlights along the way!
We are often asked about our five-year plans. Where do you see yourself in five years? What do you want to have accomplished in five years? Who do you wish to be in five years?
Many of the answers to questions like those are always subject to change. Our dreams and aspirations are fluid with life experiences. However, I firmly believe that it is our values that drives our motives — and those fundamentals are concrete. For me, providing stewardship to youths and empowering families to stay together in times of hardship is an area in which I devote a significant part of my focus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Part of doing so is being involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This is an organization, near and dear to my heart, that provides resources so that children receiving medical care in hospitals can have their families be nearby for support. Five years ago, I ran my first Chicago marathon as part of this charity. If you had asked me in 2014 about my life in 2019, I can guarantee you that all of my answers would have been completely incorrect — except one.
While many know that I have a reputation of being notoriously private, a small number know that it is because I prefer finding ways to provide light to those who have not yet found their voices. Sometimes, that does mean asking for assistance when appropriate. I am proud to say that I am once again returning to the Chicago marathon as part of the charity team with the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and I hope you will consider making a donation on my behalf via the link in my bio. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Five years ago, the only question that I would have answered correctly about today is, “What will you care about in five years?” Five years ago, today, and five years from now, my answer was, is, and always will be this: home is where the heart is. Thank you for your consideration.
My reaction when my plan says “rest day.” 😬 I have a love/love relationship with rest days. Don’t get me wrong, I love being up, on the grind, working hard, running full speed ahead. But there is a certain serenity to sleeping in, vegging out, throwing your legs up, and stretching out those fatigued muscles. On rest days, you can almost always find me on the couch, watching a horrible Netflix movie, or reading a book, or rocking out with headphones in to my hipster jams. I am of the firm belief that rest days are just as important as workouts to give your body a reset. Today’s rest day is powered by The Office and The Shins. 🤘🏻 what are you doing on your rest day??.

May have pushed my tempo run a little hard, but I'll take the splits!
Your one and only true competitor is yourself.
It’s your fears, doubts, and insecurities, waiting for a moment of weakness to attack.
But we can’t get far if we let them win. If we let them become an impassable mountain that stands in our way, then we won’t ever get to the top.
So we recognize them, respect them, and continue on without thinking twice. Because your WHY, your DREAMS, your GOALS, and who you are meant to become will always be stronger.
And nothing - not our fears of what could go wrong, not our doubts about if we’re really capable, not our insecurities about what anyone else things - can stop us.
So the question isn’t can you.
It’s - will you?
Hi 🙋🏼♀️ I'm Janina, let me introduce myself real quick: I started running about three years ago in Cape Town and am now running in Cologne and wherever else I find myself! Sometimes, I'm brave enough to run in a sports bra, sometimes I'd rather wear a shirt. Same about the shorts. Sometimes my thighs look strong to me, sometimes they're just big. That's just how it is 🤷🏼♀️ my favourite thing about Instagram is meeting other strong women runners and rooting for their journey!! What's your story?

“What’s meant to be will always find its way. ALWAYS.”
Happy Thursday everyone!

Yesterdays spur of the moment blast around the Lake... felt good! Hot day too
Research # 122 on my blog “Impact Walk vs Run.” ————————————
Credits to R.Willy & University of Montana.
Scientific Learning: Whether walking or running there’s an impact in our joints that we also have to monitor aside from monitoring our progress using a sports device such as Garmin and Fitbit. We focused on monitoring and challenging our lungs and heart rate using a sports watch but neglect monitoring the proper time and exposure to impact (loading) in our bodies.
Practical Application in Running: In the NBA there training is divided into three phases which are 1.) Pre-Season (focused on skills such as handling, passing, dribbling) 2.) Season (focuses on jumping, running, & shooting performance) 3.) Post-Season (focusing on recovery & rehabilitation after a tiring year). In our running we can divide the focus of our program depending on the Phase which is pre-running event completing a target amount of steps (10,000 steps for example) for our bodies to get used to the impact but in the lightest way possible before doing a run and sprint that has a higher impact. Then during the competition phase (6 months time frame generally for a 42Km Marathon Run) is where we will run after completing the task from pre-season which is 10,000 walking steps a day so that in running our bodies are fatigue and pain resistant after improving our tolerance and capacity during the pre season. For the post competition in running we will jog as it focuses on recovery after a 6 months training program for a 42Km Run.
My Thoughts: We run right away that has a higher impact in our bodies without first doing the one that has a lesser impact which is walking. What we can do so that our bodies will be ready and prepared for the impact in running is do a walking program first. Instead of progressing right away to running; let’s do a lighter demand in our breathing and landing tolerance which is walking and jogging.
As always my bias would be where the evidence (proven scientific claims) takes me until convinced otherwise. Go another mile in distance running through scientific learning.

Nee Kinners, jetzt mal ohne Flachs!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Was ist also passiert?

by the always cool @isamarathoner
and have been hooked ever sense. 😎 Swipe ⬅️ to see a the clip in use. It carries my phone, ID, & cash while I’m running, cycling, and kayaking. I highly recommend it (@paisleypower5
can attest to how much I love it! 😂) Questions? Ask away!
Vem @berlinmarathon
Day 178/365 Running One More Mile Against MS - Another running book bites the dust. @adharanand
has definitely confirmed that he is my favourite running writer. I have loved each of his previous two books and The Rise of the Ultra Runners is no different. I would even go as far to say as it has confirmed that I would like to run an Ultra Marathon. I won’t spoil any of the book but if you like running it’s an absolute must read. •
Running with the Kenyans made me want to go to Iten, The Way of the Runner made me want to run in Japan - Has The Rise of the Ultra Runners made me want to run UTMB? Not quite yet, but I’d definitely give one of the shorter ones a go.
Just the mile today for me. Legs were feeling it from yesterday and I had a little boy feeling sorry for himself after some jabs at the docs. He comes first, so I came home early from work, skipped my commute run and just did the mile - back on it tomorrow and with a solid finish to June it could be my longest mileage month ever! 🤞
Berlin W5D3. Hill repeats with some MP miles afterwards. That was pretty intense - 3 mile warm-up, 8 hill repeats at 10K Pace / 8%, 2 miles at target MP, and then a mile to cool down. But I felt strong and am really happy with how it went! 🔥 Also, I much prefer doing hills outside but it is almost 90F so that wasn’t happening... 😛
34 mulher a passar a linha de chegada;
