As part of the #cellular #conservation
of endangered avian species, our group initiated a primary #cell
culture project aimed at preserving #endangered
avian species in Japan, such as the #Okinawa
rail. However, primary cells cannot be cultured indefinitely because of cellular #senescence
and stresses caused by cell culture. To overcome these cell culture limitations, primary cells have to be immortalized.
They succeeded to obtain the immortalized avian cells with #K4DT
expression and conclude that the K4DT method is useful to extend the cell division and immortalization of avian-derived cells.

The cellular metabolism includes all the biochemical reactions that allow a cell to survive, differentiate and develop. In order to grow a cell must obtain energy from the breaking down of complex organic molecules such as carbohydrates and lipids. Nowadays, it is evident that many human diseases involve abnormal metabolic states that perturb normal physiology and lead to severe tissue dysfunction and,also, cancer. Oncogenic signaling pathways rearrange the cellular metabolism to meet the bioenergetic requirement of an uncontrolled proliferating cell. Through several studies, it is clear now that such metabolic alterations not only promote cancer progression but also contribute to the chemoresistance of cancer. Targeting specific enzymes and metabolic intermediates can improve the efficacy of cancer therapy and help to overcome the therapeutic resistance.@sci_comm
Il metabolismo cellulare include tutte le reazioni biochimiche che permettono a una cellula di sopravvivere, differenziarsi e svilupparsi. Al fine di crescere una cellula deve ottenere energia dallo smantellamento di molecole complesse come carboidrati e lipidi. È evidente che molte malattie umane coinvolgano stati metabolici anomali che perturbano la normale fisiologia e possono causare severe disfunzioni a tessuti e ,anche, cancro. I pathway oncogenici riorganizzano il metabolismo cellulare per venire incontro alle richieste bioenergetiche di cellule che proliferano senza controllo. È chiaro che queste alterazioni metaboliche non solo promuovono la progressione tumorale ma contribuiscono anche alla resistenza ai chemioterapici. Colpire specifici enzimi o intermedi metabolici può migliorare la terapia antitumorale e aiutare a superare la resistenza alle cure.

This is what the inside of an urchin looks like!
The yellow/orangey parts are their gonads (reproductive organs) & those are the bits people eat. In Hong Kong its called “uni” & quite a nice/expensive dish. These ones are quite small & you would generally wait until further into spawning season before harvesting to get the biggest juiciest gonads! .
There is actually quite a lot of empty space inside as you can see, this one is just cut in half. I was removing the gonads which I froze for further protein analysis, however as I mentioned in another post, the freezer got left open by mistake in my lab & my samples got ruined lol 😅🤪🤷♀️

Working with stickinsects is daily buiseness these days. These here are nymphs of Achrioptera fallax, native in Madagascar. They were pets but died due to natural causes at a young age. The left one had pierced intestines and was emptied and cleaned as far as possible with my resources. The middle one had intact organs and will not get special treatment. On the right is a skin which was left after growing.

INVASIVE SPECIES: Little Fire Ant (LFA)
How to Test for LFA at Home
1)Smear Chopstick lightly with Peanut Butter
2)Place Peanut Butter coated chopstick in area which you are looking to test for LFA
3)Shaded and Moist areas near vegetation are best locations to find LFA
4)Leave Peanut Butter Coates chopstick for minimum 30minutes - 1hour undisturbed
5)Retrieve Peanut Butter coated chopstick and place in ziplock bag and seal bag with ants inside
6)Place bag in freezer for 24hours to kill ants
7)Send to Hawaii Department of Agriculture for proper identification

🐠 Butterflyfish Hybridization: in the video and photographs to follow, you will see two different species of butterflyfish swimming together. The Oval butterflyfish (Chaetodon trifasciatus) and the Melon butterflyfish (C. lunulatus). The two are differentiated by their tail colors, the melon being yellow and the oval being white. In 2011, researchers published a paper showing that these two species are able to produce hybrid species in Christmas Island. I was fortunate enough to 1) have learned this information from a former teacher on trip and 2) to witness this pair swimming around in Amed, Bali yesterday. Natural hybridization is common in reef fishes due to shared space and food, however the evolutionary after effects of this have not been studied yet.
I’m heartbroken and devastated to post this. The tarantula who started it all has passed away. My love of invertebrates began when I bought Tiktaalik (Taali). When I bought her, I had people call me disgusting and gross for having a spider in my house, but I pity their ignorance now, as this little spider was a sweetheart, and opened me up to a whole world of fascinating animals that I’d previously overlooked.
Taali had been a challenge to care for, her species definitely aren’t for beginners. I was struggling to replicate the temperature and humidity of a tropical Queensland rainforest, where her species come from, but other tarantula keepers assured me I’d be fine, and that she’d eat more and grow when the weather warms up. I can’t be sure, but it looks like my little Taali was trying to moult, and died very early on in the process. I was so attached to this spider, it’s not going to be the same without her.
