The 1996 Yankees-Braves World Series began 22 years ago tonight! Right in the middle of my #RainMan
period: A.C. every weekend for blackjack, leaving early enough Monday to make classes @ NYU.
At age 22, I was still a watch-every-pitch diehard Yankees fan. My plan was to get to A.C. by 8am, play at Resorts, then head over to "home base,' the Trop. The first part worked to perfection: I trended down for hours, had a shoe go crazy positive... and went on a ridiculous streak where I kept winning two hands at a time. From $800 down to $1600 ahead, on one shoe!
Almost forgot that the Yankees were playing that night (haha). As I drove to the Trop, I pondered Game 1's pitching matchup: Andy Pettitte and John Smoltz.
The idea was to forgo blackjack in lieu of my beloved Bombers. The excitement was palpable: this was the first WS game in the Bronx in 15 years! Sadly, Atlanta scored early and often. As they mounted a rally in the top of the 3rd, I decided -- for probably the first time in my life -- that I had better things to do than suffer through the game. Over the next 3 hrs, not only did I give back $600, the Braves blasted the Yanks out of their own building, 12-1! What a downer the day turned out to be :-(
Postscript: The Yankees would get smoked again the following night, win all 3 games in Atlanta, then return to The Bronx and beat the Braves in Game 6, capturing the franchise's 23rd championship :-)
TOP: 1996 World Series, Game 1. Jim Leyritz, Wade Boggs, Derek Jeter, Mariano Duncan, Tino Martinez, and manager Joe Torre commiserate, as Andy Pettitte leaves the game after an early battering.
