There is no honour among thieves and the rats eventually end up eating each other - that, in a nutshell, is the Trump Administration, all headed by a grown toddler that barely knows the basics of politics. .
Woodward paints an image of a White House in chaos, anxious aides who attempt to keep Trumps unpredictable behaviour at bay and leeches attempting to inflict their own agenda into office with little concern about their fellow countrymen and women. I mean....tell us something we don’t know, and that’s the problem I had with this book; it was ultimately underwhelming. I have followed the Trump Administration almost daily since Trump was elected into office, and while it was enjoyable to go behind the scenes and have some of the blanks filled it, it wasn’t anything I didn’t already know. When you’re one of the men that helped bring down Nixon, we’re expecting a lot from you.
There were some moments in the book that made me laugh out loud. My favourite being former Lehman Brothers honcho Gary Cohen producing the Burea Of Labour Statistics to Trump, showing that the biggest voluntary leavers of jobs were people in manufacturing! People no longer want to be in assembly lines and coal mines - who would have thought! Bringing back those jobs was part of Trumps initial appeal to his base, so reading this was delicious. .
Woodward gives you what he knows, but fails to draw you in, given that we’re dealing with the worlds biggest megalomaniacs, that shouldn’t be too hard, there’s heaps of material to work with. Perhaps, though, that is not the aim. Getting candid access to detailed interviews, collating the evidence (though there have been criticisms about the validity of his methods) and journalistic investigation are his talents. He has more than earned his stripes, but in some places, this book fell short. .
