This time of year has always been a struggle for me. Prior to meeting J, I spent a lot of time alone, sometimes watching people Christmas shop, or picking up shifts at the women’s shelter where I worked—just so I could be around people. When I was alone, I turned to food for solace and comfort. I made tons of it “because it was the holidays” and excused the weight gain, the sadness, the aching of my body. It’s still a hard time of year, even with being married. I still carry all of that with me, try as I might to rid myself of the baggage. Lately I have been repeating this phrase to encourage myself “even if..” as in, “take a short walk, even if you feel like laying on the couch.” Or “Dress up for work, even if you don’t feel your best.” Or even “do something nice for yourself today, even if you feel like you didn’t do something to deserve it.” I’m not saying it always works, but fake it til you make it?

🦃Self-Care Sunday: Pre-Thanksgiving edition 🥧 • Remember that eating thanksgiving food - even a whole lot of it - is not a bad thing and doesn’t make you bad! You don’t have to do anything special to “make room for” or “soften the blow” of what you are going to eat on Thursday. • Food is just food and your body is really good at figuring out what to do with it! That means that you can just focus on the cleaning, cooking, and traveling on your to-do list and you don’t have to waste any of your time and energy on dieting or other BS. • You DO NOT need to: 🍁 Go on a diet 🍁 Do a cleanse or detox 🍁 Fast 🍁 Count calories 🍁 Do hours of cardio 🍁 Do extra workouts 🍁 Freak out and panic • Literally, no matter what you eat on thanksgiving day and no matter how much you exercise or don’t this week, you will be 100% okay! You will still be your awesome self in your awesome body that is smart and resilient. • Take care of yourself this week by checking your thoughts and actions, saying NO to diet culture bullshit, and focusing your time and energy on the good stuff (connection, gratitude, pleasure, abundance, ect.) 💙 • You deserve to have a pleasant holiday! Your experience doesn’t have to be dominated by food guilt and body shame. With some intention and mindfulness you can do a lot to make your experience more positive! #selflove let’s talk about it for a moment shall we?⁣ ⁣ I might just hit “post” and run away 🙈⁣ ⁣ But, I have this nagging feeling that someone NEEDS to hear this message so here goes. ⁣ ⁣ I used to talk myself out working out but MORE importantly I used to talk myself out of eating healthy. Which, if you ask me- is even more important than what program I’m doing... ⁣ ⁣ > I’m nursing a baby and the #domperidone will make me gain weight anyway, I might as well have all the pasta, and dessert, and after-dinner snack, bc what’s the point? ⁣ ⁣ > I have two kids and no time to get to the gym ⁣ ⁣ > This is my new body, I might as well get used to it and just get comfortable.... ⁣ ⁣ Well, let me tell you something. Body positivity and self-love isn’t about being in love with your body as much as it is loving the home that houses your soul. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, you should love your skin. ⁣ Yes, you should love your body for all the beautiful things it does. ⁣ Yes, yes, yes. ⁣ ⁣ What it is not? It’s not allowing your excuses to get mistaken for #grace . ⁣ ⁣ I did that for far too long.⁣ ⁣ Body positivity for me was finally having that conversation with MYSELF - “I love myself so much that I’m going to fuel it with foods that make me healthy.” ⁣ ⁣ “I’m going to get my body moving because it will further my health.” ⁣ ⁣ “I’m going to nourish my soul and do the things that keep me alive!”⁣ ⁣ because you CAN love your body and seek improvement instead of confirming. You CAN love your skin and make healthier choices instead of yelling #yolo and going HAM on all the cheesecake. ⁣ ⁣ One does not negate the other 🙅🏽‍♀️⁣ ⁣ Does this all make sense? And if you totally get what I’m saying here will you drop a ❤️ so I don’t feel like a complete fool 😬⁣
Halasana; Plough Pose; One of my favourite places to lie these days...💚 . . I remember watching the instructor in one of my first Yoga classes about 18 years ago, relax in this pose and comment that it was: “Just what her back needed”. Me? At the time, my back was too busy trying not to snap in half to actually have time to think about what it needed!! Safe to say, I was NOT relaxed! 🤣 . . My body at that time was pretty out of balance. I spent massive amounts of time in the gym, lifting heavy weights and jumping around but pretty much zero time relaxing and releasing my muscles and mind. I was physically strong but only in a certain way and my head and life were the same... . . A healthy back & spine should be able to move in all directions & it’s safe to say that in a yoga sense, the way our spine behaves is a direct reflection of how we operate on a mental & spiritual level. . . If our great, central nerve line is tight, restricted & limited in mobility so we might find our mind to be too. . . My approach to fitness has thankfully changed over the past 18 years but more so I think, has my thinking. I like to believe that these two things have supported each other to make my Plough Pose a happier place to be... It’s hard to commit to body acceptance when it seems like such a far-reaching goal. You seem so far away from not obsessing, not hating what you see in the mirror, not constantly comparing yourself to others. I can relate. There was a time I would never dream of posting some of the pictures I post now or wearing some of the clothes I wear now (#ROCKthatcrop 😜). I would never dream of seeing a picture of myself and not picking apart every little thing. In the past I would’ve seen this picture and become riddled with anxiety, scouring the Internet for a new diet to start first thing tomorrow🙄Now I look at this strong body with love and acceptance. I started small though. One day at a time. So maybe.... just maybe you could take on the “just for today” mentality. This is a beautiful way to start small and give yourself a low threshold. You’re not committing to self-love just yet. Maybe that feels too far away for you. BUT....Just for today, try to have a different perspective. Every time you say something mean about yourself, try to replace it with a kind thought or a neutral thought. Tell yourself it’s just for today and see how it feels. Hi, for those of you that don’t know, my name is Maja (pronounced like MY-YUH, not MADJ-AH.) _ I have worked as a personal trainer and fitness instructor for the last 6 years. I believe in using fitness as a tool to improve quality of life without focusing on things like weight loss. Weight loss isn’t even a measure of fitness but strength, endurance, power, flexibility, stability, mobility, and cardiovascular capacity are. _ A lot of how I coach and work with people is influenced by my own struggles with my body and my history of eating disorders (anorexia, exercise bulimia, and orthorexia.) _ Through my work I help people break up with diet culture, enjoy exercise and movement, and make peace with their bodies. I strive so that anything I create or coach can directly enhance people’s lives and help them improve. My goals are to provide people with coaching, resources, and information that give them #StrengthAndSanity . _ I believe that opportunities and information to improve one’s health and fitness should be available to everybody, which is why I share so much information here. _ If you’ve read this far, thank you. My advice to you is: 1️⃣ set your goals at the beginning of the week 2️⃣ be intentional about your food choices! You don’t have to restrict yourself, but be mindful and keep the rest of the week on point 👌🏼 3️⃣ get your workouts in!! You’ll feel so much better moving your body and getting those endorphins running 🙌🏼 4️⃣ drink more water! If you think you’ve had enough for the day, drink 8 more ounces. Chances are you are under drinking- especially if you’re indulging in some alcoholic beverages 🍾 . Let’s make it a great week 💙

Measuring ourselves (and our worth) against other people diminishes us every single time . When we make comparisons we divert from our own strengths, potential, goals, passions & accomplishments to fit an ideal that someone else has created for us & miss out on our purpose & power . TIME & SELF-CARE: been VERY MIA this week because life has just been go go go that I'm moving so fast I no longer have a hand...? 😂📸 the thing is we all have the same amount of hours in a day and what you choose to fill it with is your choice, thoughts & actions alike. . . This week I've realised many things but the two main 1. The mirror doesn't determine my self worth and it will never validate who I am or who I want to be 2. DO things that aren't work related MORE often . . I feel a bit apart of the rat race at the minute and I HATE that feeling. Like my day revolves around work, the clock and where I have to be next. And that's playing a huge part of why my self care and my current feelings about my body image is semi self destructive . I will try to upload a bit more this week, I've had some break throughs and plenty 'off' days but all useful to grow from day by day 🙌🏼 happy Sunday all xxx

Is (insert exercise or movement here) bad for your body? ⠀ Often people say that a specific movement is “bad” for a joint- letting your knees go in front of your ankles when you’re squatting, for example. ⠀ Is it bad? The answer, as with most things, is “it depends.” ⠀ If you can squat with your back straight, hips low, and you’re able to keep tension in your glutes & hamstrings throughout the whole range of motion of the squat, even when your knees travel in front of your ankles, then no, this exercise is in no way “bad” for your knees because you’re controlling your body properly, so the exercise is GOOD for you in the sense that it will increase strength and joint longevity. ⠀ If you squat down & your hips can’t get low without your heels coming up, and you can’t even begin to find tension in your glutes and hamstrings, then no, you aren’t doing your body any favors. That does NOT mean you shouldn’t squat- it’s that you need to learn the movement properly by taking the steps to enable your body to move freely & properly- which may mean doing a lot of simple, “boring” work to strengthen and increase range of motion in your lower body so that, eventually, you will be able to squat properly- in a way that’s good for your knees. ⠀ Same thing with something like the splits. Stretching & practicing sliding into the splits will be horrible for your hips & knees and the ligaments surrounding them. ⠀ Learning the splits from a strength-based perspective & being able to control your body in that position will make the movement fine for you- but doing it this way will likely take a couple years, and most people don’t want to work that hard or long, especially when you can get the splits in a matter of months by just stretching (and loose, floppy ligaments and pain/injuries down the road). ⠀ Obviously, most people reading this have no intention of doing the splits- it’s just an extreme example. But you should be able to squat properly. Your body should be able to move in a wide variety of ways- don’t even blindly listen to what any “expert,” in any field, says about your body without deeper analysis, using your intuition, and learning all that you can.
As lovey dovey as it sounds, the term Body Positivity can actually bring up a lot of emotions for people. The BoPo movement can feel very exclusive, with thinner women being told that they don’t need to be part of it because their bodies are already accepted by society, fit women being told that they don’t fall under the heading of body positive because they are obviously fitness obsessed and should stick to the hashtag fitspo, and bigger women being told that by being body positive they are promoting an unhealthy lifestyle and obesity. Well, let me just say right here and right now: Loving your body is not a privilege, it’s a RIGHT! And if you are committed to loving your body as it is in this very moment regardless of size, shape, color, ability or any other thing that makes you beautifully you then you ARE part of the movement and you ARE body positive! I was sweating like a pig today during a workout and realized that I am the heaviest I’ve ever been and I DON’T CARE! What I do care about is that I fucking love my tummy, my boobies, and the cellulite on my ass, and more than that? 🏀 BALLING ON BIG BOI ABS!!🏀 🌍 If there is an exercise I do enjoy, it is the ab wheel. While not necessary, I do admit the fact that this is the only abdominal exercise that gets my core sore. It requires core strength like no other and that’s when you start out at the most basic level(on your knees). I’ve been working on getting better at roll outs and something amazing happened the other day. 🐻 I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO ROLL OUT IN A BEAR CRAWL POSITION! I learned this variation from one of the other trainers at @mffclubhouse and added it to my repertoire. As you can see in the top video, I had a very difficult time last month doing it. Now, I can at least roll out to the point where I am almost in a push up position. ☺️ I dedicate this progress to the continuous sharing of knowledge that @harold_gibbons encourages among the mff staff. Eggs ‘n’ greens Calories: 230 calories INGREDIENTS * 1 Tbsp olive oil * 1 cup sliced mushrooms * 2 cups spinach * 1 egg * 1 Tbsp Sriracha sauce INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add half the olive oil to a heated skillet, sauté mushrooms and spinach, and remove to a plate. Add remaining olive oil to the skillet. Crack egg into the pan, and cook sunny-side up. Add egg to vegetables. Drizzle with Sriracha sauce. When I feel like I have control over nothing in my life, I workout. Because the one thing I CAN control is my health and my mindset. —— I’m such a control freak. I like knowing what is going to happen and when, and in my own way. So I can prepare for it (#organization ). Surprise, surprise, that’s not how life works. —— The last few days, I’ve been SO overwhelmed wondering if I’m in the right situations or if I’m passing up opportunities I shouldn’t be or if I’m even making the right choices. Anxiety, that’s your cue. —— There’s this tactic someone taught me a long time ago. To breathe in and say “You are God,” and to breathe out and say “And I trust You.” After doing this a few times this morning, I actually believed it. And what an overwhelming sense of relief. That it doesn’t matter if i’m “missing” opportunities or unsure if I’m making the right choices. Because God’s got me RIGHT here for a reason. Whether it’s forever or for a lesson learned. And I don’t have to control it. I can just sit in it and breathe and realize that my worries are so minuscule in relation to the plan that He has for me. Because there is no “wrong” situation. Just “a” situation.
