#throwback to roadtripping up through California with my mom a couple weeks ago. We pulled over at a rest stop & found ourselves looking out over a reservoir. . Are you hitting the reset button on your diet & exercise plan today? . You opted for fun and enjoyment this weekend & after assessing the damage in the mirror, it's time to recommit. . If you're like me, this was a weekly occurrence, & most of the time, my weekend of cheating started Thursday. I figured if I was good for a few days a week, I deserved to overindulge on the weekends. But then every damn Monday, I'd have to reset because my stomach wasn't flat and my thighs still touched. . I was obsessed with seeing results and I sure as hell wasn't a #1 fan of the journey. . I did this every week starting at 12 years old and didn't stop until I was 24, much heavier, more depressed and anxious than I'd ever been. I saw pictures from childhood - me smiling & playing - and thought what happened to that light in me? I wanted it back. . So I gave up on unsustainable dieting and over-exercising & committed to a new way. I didn't know what it would be, but I knew I needed a new approach because this wasn't fuckin working for me anymore. . Flash forward to this morning. I woke up and I didn't assess my body. I didn't cheat this weekend because none of my meals are cheat meals. I eat and move as I want and notice my body's abilities. . What's something you have always wanted to do, but when you start, a little voice tells you you can't? . The dream has even started to fade because it seems so out of reach after multiple failures. There's a sadness attached to that dream because you want it so bad, but you can't. . I'm here to tell you that you CAN, but whether you do is 90% up to how you speak to yourself. The other 10% is following the steps. You can't accomplish anything if your biggest enemy is camping out in your head. . I finished my first half-marathon last Sunday! I attempted a half two years ago & my mom and brother finished, but I didn't. I was so disappointed in myself. I thought about everything I did wrong in my training and what I would change. I thought I'd never complete a half. I was crushed. . The difference this year - I was my best friend & biggest fan. I promised myself this would be fun. It was an adventure and I could DO THIS! Today was an epic day of solo adventure. . My last stop was this beach up highway 1, just north of santa cruz. No cell service, the beach was quiet, & I tromped all over, barefoot, feeling the cold wet sand between my toes. It was glorious. I've been feeling meh about things lately. I haven't been spending as much time outside and have skipped quite a few of my morning walks. I've been posting less and having a hard time staying motivated. I kept telling myself as I sat on the couch that it wasn't connected to anything. "I'm just tired". . Then this morning I made myself go for a walk to find center or alignment (whichever you prefer). I was happy to be out when I started, but was very low energy. . Then I had an idea when I walked into the woods - taking jumping photos! I love a good jumping photo session and all the fails crack me up! I started laughing and forgetting the meh feeling. I felt passion for life and now I'm promising myself my daily walks again because they seriously save my days. . If you feel the start of the winter blues coming on, do something for yourself. I talk a lot about self-care & self-worth, and understanding the importance of putting ourselves first. . It can sound selfish, as if other people don't matter and it can be a tough mindset shift, especially if you're a recovering people-pleaser like me. . I wasn't comfortable in my skin, I was depressed most of the time, and being in social settings became almost impossible because of my anxiety. I didnt want to be around other people as a shell of myself. I couldn't fake wholeness anymore & BossWomyn was the beginning of the realization that I needed to put me first. Trying to please everyone around me but myself wasn't working anymore. . So I started a new approach. I started asking myself what I want and if my mind doesn't know, I ask my body what feels right. If I start to worry what other people will think about me, I repeat my mantra, which I'll share in an upcoming post. . And the part that surprised me the most? I enjoy my interactions with people way more. I don't feel as much anxiety and I'm okay with people disliking me because it means I'm being myself. And the relationships I have and enjoy mean more because I'm choosing those relationships. Not everyone is going to like me and that's okay. It's also kind of a relief. Can you imagine everyone liking you and maintaining close, honest relationships with EVERYONE? Me neither. . If we want to improve our relationships with others, we have to improve the relationship with ourselves. . The #halfmarathon is a month away! I can hardly believe it. It's been tough the last couple weeks to be as consistent as I'd like to be, but I'm still running. My last long run was a few days ago when I topped out at 12 miles. 12 freaking miles. Sheesh. For the next four weeks, the runs will all be 7 miles or less. Hallelujah! . Give yourself permission to be all you wish you could be. . I thought I wasn't an artist. In high school, I was given the choice to pursue music or art. I was good at singing and I didn't think I was good at art. So I chose music. . I've been drawing my whole life - mostly doodles, but some that I took my time on - and I thought the idea of painting was so romantic, but I wouldn't paint. I didn't know how. I never took any painting classes. . Lately, I've been challenging my ideas about who I am. Am I really not a painter or is my inexperience keeping me from it? . I've been painting lately. I started off small, with something I doodle all of the time - pine trees - and just started a landscape painting. . If you want to do something, but you're afraid to start, begin small. Do something you can finish so you get a win and gain some confidence. Then go big & have fun with it! You're not doing this for anyone but yourself so laugh at your mistakes & enjoy the feeling of starting something new. . Ultimately, it doesn't matter what the finished product looks like. Spent some much needed time meditating on a log this morning. . I have the day off and I'm spending it with loads of self-care. I know it's so important to spend time on me, but some days come and go and I realize I'm feeling less like myself. That's when I know I've been neglecting my self-care. . In the past, I would stay inside and the feeling would get worse. Now, when I'm noticing a drop in energy, I take a walk and spend time in the woods because nature heals. . That being said, every body is different. The important part is listening to our bodies' own unique self-care needs with an open mind & positivity. So when your body goes, "That log looks like a good spot. I want to sit on it", rather than listening to the voice telling me how weird it is to sit on this log in this public dog park, I sit. I stopped weighing myself 8 years ago. . I stopped commenting on my food intake & noting my flaws 5 years ago. . I stopped restricting my food intake 3 years ago. . With each of these behavior changes, I expected my body to be what I wanted it to be. I expected the war with my body to be over, but it continued. . 5 months ago, I stopped judging my behaviors around food, exercise, binge-watching tv, etc. By letting go of the control and allowing my body to just be without judgement, my behaviors and my body actually changed. . Without all of that negativity in my head, I have more energy than I've ever had. I'm training for a half-marathon, I go for walks every morning that I'm not running, and I am pretty much always playing. . My body is different, too. My clothes are loose, I feel stronger, and the tension in my shoulders is much less. . There's no perfect diet and exercise regimen that is magically going to give you the body you want. Eating the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day is unnecessary. . Every body is different and the only person who knows what "good" feels like in your body is you. Forget what you've learned about weight loss and listen to yourself. To get the body you want, you've got to like the body you have. . I thought my body could only be thin if I kept eating too little and working out too much & I wouldn't do it anymore. I couldn't. It just wasn't sustainable. I lost hope in fighting to have the body I wanted and I succumbed to being fat the rest of my life. The weight gain started. I'd lose a little and then the weight I lost, plus a few more lbs would pile on. . One day I noticed how negative I was about my body and how tiring it got to constantly ridicule myself. Sure the eating disorder behaviors were gone, but the #ed thoughts were still there. . I meditated in my body and could feel the weight. It wasn't just the pounds, but the heavy weight of sadness because of all the negativity I had added to it over the years. I didn't want to feel that weight; I wanted to feel light and free. So I started thinking about my body in a kind way. I wanted to be friends, not enemies. . I look at my body differently now. My body is wise. It knows what I need to eat and do to maintain itself, if only I trust it to do so. . Have you ever had a #manager that enjoyed micro-managing you? It feels like you've tried all the #diets and you keep gaining back the weight you're losing. If only you could find the right diet for your body, you could keep the weight off. . I'll let you in on a secret I learned only a few months ago. No matter how many diets you try, the weight will come back. Why? . Thoughts create our beliefs, which determine our actions & reinforce our beliefs. . "I'm fat" (thought) leads to "my body is hopeless" (belief), which leads to unsuccessful dieting (action) reinforcing the belief that your body is hopeless. . To actually keep the weight off and enjoy time in your body, your thoughts need to change first. . To reverse dieting patterns, try thinking, "My body is great. It gets me where I need to be. It allows me to go to work and support myself. It allows me to hang with my friends in the ways I want to. It allows me to carry heavy things. I'm fit & healthy". These thoughts will lead to a belief of, "My body is a beautiful, strong force to be reckoned with", which leads to play time and intuitive eating (action), reinforcing the belief your body is a beautiful & strong force. . It can be difficult for us in our western, science-based #culture to have #faith that our #thoughts create our #beliefs create our #actions . I've told people this and I get many eye rolls. Wake up. . *check mirror, tummy squeeze, suck it in* . Ugh, why couldn't I be skinny? #Life would be so much easier. . #Breakfast . Ooh I would love a bagel and a latte. Those are so bad though. I heard bagels have as many #carbs as 6 pieces of bread! I should stop eating bagels. Lattes are filled with crap, too. Black #coffee and a piece of toast with banana and peanut butter it is. 410 calories. Only 1,090 #calories for the rest of the day. . I should have woken up early to go for a #run . I'll just go to the #gym tonight to burn off that bowl of cereal from late last night. I hope there aren't any birthdays today at work. I don't want to be tempted with anything bad & then I'll have to exercise more. . This was my reality. I was always planning my food & workouts and then berating my body for not doing what I wanted it to. I didn't feel good in my body, didn't want anyone to see me eat, and had so much jealousy for women I assumed were naturally skinny. . My #body became exactly what I didn't want it to be. You know when you tell a kid not to do something & suddenly s/he's doing exactly what you said not to? If you focus on everything you do wrong in your body, guess what happens? You'll continue those behaviors you don't want to continue. Whatever you #focus on becomes your #reality . Thoughts lead to behaviors in-line with our thoughts. A negative #bodyimage will create a body you don't like. #selffulfillingprophecy . Nope, this isn't an easy shift to make. It's tough to stop obsessing about #weight and image when that's been your focus for most of your life. It's tough to let go of this idea that food restriction is what you need to have a body you want. #1 life-changer? Stop giving a #fuck what people think of you. It doesn't matter! If they don't like you, that's okay. Some people just don't get along. It's not personal and most of the time, if someone doesn't like you, it says more about them than you. - I used to be so caught up in what people thought of me that I'd base my behavior off of it. I'd bend backwards trying to be what everyone wanted me to be that I lost who I was. I became shy, sad, struggled with an #eatingdisorder & #depression for over 10 years. - I was battling myself & my body & it exhausted me. I didn't want to fight anymore. I talked to my body, apologized & said I wanted to get along. One day it clicked & I realized I was to blame for that internal battle I was having. At first, that was a terrifying realization, but then it was a huge relief. I could change. I could fix my relationship with myself and body, and be ME. - Weight lifted from my shoulders. The anxiety in my chest went away for the first time in a long time. I had energy to move my body & play. I used to be so afraid of people, always worried they'd take advantage of me. Not believing there are people out there who would want to be friends with me for me. So I made myself smaller and talked less about myself. I didn't think people gave a shit about what I was going through so I didn't share it. I became a hollowed-out version of myself. I became shy and sad, which is so not me! 😊 A few years ago, I decided I wanted to be the happy, positive Morgan again. I googled "how to be happy" "happiest careers" "happiest places to live" "how to lose weight in a healthy way", thinking a physical change would do the trick. I started self-care, thinking if I did the actions, I'd be happy and at peace. After a couple years, I still wasn't happy and I was stuck in a deep depression. I was so so so frustrated by happy people, wanting them to give me a quick action that would make me happy like them. 👩‍🏫 I read a lot of books and when I was at a low point, flying across the country to stay with family, I came across @thechampagnediet 'Girl Code' and read it in one flight. It flipped the switch for me in realizing I was making myself unhappy by thinking negatively of myself. I was creating people's expectations of how to treat me by how I was treating myself: worthless & small. #girlcode introduced me to the idea that I'm worth the life I want, including my happiness, and so are you. 💃 Physical changes have happened in the last 3 months - my body is healthy and strong, people often tell me I'm glowing (seriously!), I walk every day, I eat whatever I want, I have new friendships, I don't bend backwards doing things I think will make other people like me - but the mental change needed to come first. I'm honoring my #body and my #goal of running the #halfmarathon by skipping today's run, going on an easy stroll and taking some fun perspective shots with the help of a #tree . After my #run two days ago, my #achillestendinitis is flaring. I kept a heating pad on it most of yesterday evening and it's still not HEALed. 🙃 I urge you to really #listen and #feel your body's aches and pains. Is it #soreness or #pain ? They both hold valuable information about your body. If you need to skip a #workout because your body is in pain, take a day off! And be nice to yourself about it. Taking time to recover and heal is not lazy or an easy out; it's smart #AF . *Running today isn't worth the potential of not being able to walk comfortably tomorrow*
Diet culture isnt just making your waist smaller; it's making your mind smaller. Loss of confidence, Fear of expression, Fear of judgement, Fear of speaking in public, Slower brain function, Fear of eating in public, Loss of trust in people, Body-obsession, Social paranoia, Loss of connection, Loss of laughter, Loss of joy. When I look at this photo of myself from high school, I see a healthy young woman, but when I think about how I felt when this photo was taken, I remember wearing a shirt to cover myself so my family wouldn't see my stomach. We had a bbq that day and I remember stressing about how many chips vs veggies to eat. What would people think if I pigged out on too many chips?! They might think I was fat and unhealthy! I was bingeing and purging to keep myself this size, as well as over-exercising. I was always thinking about my calorie input vs energy output. I was afraid of gaining weight so much that I was never able to focus on things outside of myself because my one #goal I thought would solve everything was being #thin . Until I was thin, my #dreams couldn't happen. The thing is, when in this #mindset , I would never be thin enough to stop obsessing about my #weight ...until my mindset, followed by my body image, shifted. I tell you this because I have not always eaten what I wanted or felt really good in my skin. For years, I couldn't understand why I was so unhappy until I accepted the cold, hard truth that the only person responsible for my happiness is me. Then I started making changes, realizing thoughts about my body were creating this negative body experience. I give my body permission to tell me what it needs rather than using my restrictive body image to shame me into thinness. My goal isn't being thin anymore; it's to be authentically me and help others realize their authenticity. I'm about the same size now as I was when this photo was taken, but I see my body for what it is now, not for what it isn't. My body never needed to change; my body image did. I went out with friends last night, drank #tequila and really really didn't want to go on my training run this morning. I wanted to sit on the couch, but I told myself I needed to do this for me. I'm worth the time and extra effort today. And I freaking did it! 5 miles! This is the first time I've consistently run and built on my distance for 3 weeks. I'm staying positive, continuing to believe in myself & rather than picking at myself on a tough run, I'm giving my body props for following along with my brain with hardly any objection. It's amazing the difference consistency, proper fuel, & positive self-talk make! Do you suffer from Apologitis? It's pretty common, and if you're a pro at apologizing, this is for you! Have you ever been standing in a line, minding your own business when someone runs into you? You say, "Im sorry", they say nothing, and keep moving? I have been in so many of these situations! I would apologize without thinking, then be annoyed with myself for being in the way. The issue with this is when I say I'm sorry for someone running into me, I'm implying fault. If this happens a couple times, it's probably no big deal, but defaulting to "I'm sorry" is a problem. It's great to apologize when you're in the wrong, but when you start apologizing for other people's behaviors ALL THE TIME, you start to implicitly believe other people's behaviors fall under your responsibility, and when someone is moving a million miles per minute and runs into you, you start to reason you could have been out of the main aisle or closer to the wall. That you could have paid more attention and planned better to stay out of the way. It's impossible and way too high of an order! Your responsibility is you and you're never in the wrong when you command your space. Next time you hear "I'm sorry" come out of your mouth, ask yourself why you're apologizing and ask if it was really necessary. Don't beat yourself up about it. It's WEEK 2 in #halfmarathon training, 16 weeks from the half. I attempted a half-marathon two years ago and received the 10K medal rather than the half medal. It was a tough day for me. I tried not to beat myself up, but I thought "If only I trained harder" "If only I'd eaten the right food" "All these other people can run a half; why can't I" "what's wrong with me" - lots of negative talk. I kept running, but didn't sign-up for anymore races until this year. There's something drastically different about me and my training plan this year: I'm done comparing myself to anyone else's progress. This one is ALL for me. Today I'm celebrating a win! Every morning this week, I woke up, made #coffee and went for a #walk before touching my to-do list. I gave myself permission to have my own workspace, and to love that space, and I am one happy camper because of it! I've worked in coffee shops, at the college library in town, and in my living room. I thought an office was an unnecessary luxury that I didn't really need. 🇩🇪"Puh! Was ein Wochenende! Und am Ende ist alles nach Plan gelaufen☺ Wie sagt man so schön "Ende gut alles gut". Habe echt mal wieder die Erfahrung gemacht, dass wenn etwas Schlechtes passiert es nicht wirklich unbedingt schlecht sein muss - sondern in dem Fall sogar vorteilhaft 😅 #mindfuck Leute ohne Spaß, ich bin echt manchmal erst in Schock und stress mich wenn mal was nicht gut läuft. Aber wenn ich mich dann echt zusammenreiße- zur meiner Mitte finde- einfach die Sache anpacke und positiv denke.. unnormal. Ich weiß es ist nicht immer einfach aber glaubt an die Macht eurer Gedanken. Mein Tipp: Nehmt euch jeden Tag mind. 5-10 min und überlegt euch für was ihr an diesem Tag dankbar seid. Es ist ne kleine Sache die mir mega geholfen hat rein zukommen in dieses Mindset. Und kein Stress: Niemand muss ein Dauer-ADHS-Strahlemann-Pseudo-Guru sein, denn die gehen mir persönlich auf den Sack☺😅 Kurz: Chill your Nuggets und bleib positiv❤ Falls du bis hier gelesen hast, bist du mein persönlicher Held *mental high 5✋* 🇬🇧What a weekend guys! And in the end everything worked out.💪All's well that ends well. And once again I realized the power of the mind🙆 First when something negative happens, I'm normally always stressing. But when I then pull myself together and just start working towards a positive outcome.. magic happens.🌠 Please do always believe in yourself and stay positive! I know it's not easy but once you'll "practice" it will. Here's one practice that I do: I take every day 5-10 min to thank for everything good that happened. And it helped me so much to find my inner peace, be positive and have the right mindset.
Walking relaxes me, it reminds me to breathe, it clarifies my thoughts all while it transports.
