Every day I gazed at the Chess-Master in awe. Every day, challenger after foolhardy challenger would line up, slam down their 20 bux and get slaughtered in a dozen moves, if they were lucky.
And every day, I asked the master to teach me his craft. Every time I asked, he'd give the same derisive answer: "Boy, I take one look at you and I say to myself 'this guy ain't gonna learn sh1t!'" Ouch, I thought to myself the first few times, and I'd quickly reply "I am no boy! And I will show you!" This became a routine, all the while at night I was braining my braining with as much chess knowledge as it could handle. I watched hundreds of videos, played thousands of matches online. I would show the fuq up one day and announce myself to his park-side arrogance.
Of course such triumph is never my destiny. One day I show up and I see this young girl sitting there, staring intently at the master. I say my stuff, he tells me to get lost and then the next day the same young girl is back by herself, her eyes never leave the chessboard. I ask 'why are you here alone?' She says her mom works in the church across the street and lets her sit in the park after school. I say 'ok', get told to drop dead by the chess-master and go home.
The next day I hit the park and am stopped in my tracks when i see the young girl sitting at the master's table and he's showing her all kinds of moves and strategies.
I rush up to them "what the fuq!?!? That's not cool. You teach her but not me!? I'm hurt." "I don't like you." he replied, like a switchblade in my side. The girl laughed and then he laughed and eyes lit up, as if a delicious idea occurred to him, then he made me an offer: "I'll make a deal with you, next week you play little Megan here and if you win I'll teach you instead." "Deal!!" I pounced, and then I bounced away, determined to shatter the child's chess dreams, for the sake of my own. The match is in five days. Wish me luck.
