Rounding out bounty hunter week for us here is the real O.G. No he’s not rocket firing, but Boba Fett still rocks a killer look and is the epitome of coolness. If you didn’t want to be Luke or Darth, then chances are that Fett was your dude. He’s gone through a lot of changes since the first conceptual figure was mocked up. As most know, Boba was originally designed to be rocket firing, but when a young kid playing with another competing line’s rocket firing toy choked on a missile, Kenner decided it was in their best interest to scrap the idea at the last minute. They went on to issue this version with a stationary rocket and an apology letter to lots of disappointed kids. Rocket firing or not, Boba Fett is still the reigning king of the bounty hunters. And he’s sporting some green, so happy St. Patrick’s Day!! #starwars #starwarscollection #wampacave #kennermailaway #kenner #kennertoys #bobafett #bountyhunter #bountyhunterweek #empirestrikesback
For fun fact Friday, let’s talk about IG-88. He’s a character that has always fascinated the minds of Star Wars fans. It’s easy to see why, with his clanky mechanical look, towering over everyone at 7’8”. Though he only makes a brief appearance in ESB you can still find him in a couple of other shots. After following a Boba Fett to Bespin in hopes of capturing the Millennium Falcon under Boba’s nose, Fett destroys IG-88 off camera. He can be seen leaning up against a wall in the scene where C-3PO accidentally stumbles into a side room and is himself blown to bits. However, IG-88, or his head rather, got its start as the combustion chamber for a Rolls-Royce Derwent jet engine which first made its appearance as a piece of the distilling equipment in the Cantina scene from A New Hope. The two figures I have here are different variations of each other. The one on the right is the commonly found version, while the one on the left is the rarer “hollow eyes” version. This version also sports a more metallic paint and lacks the black paint found at the elbows and knees of the others. Not only did Kenner make a wicked tough looking Droid with IG-88, but someone at Kenner went even further cranked the volume up to high and said, “let’s give him two guns because we can.” Power move. #starwars #starwarscollection #empirestrikesback #bountyhunter #bountyhunterweek #wampacave #ig88 #kenner #kennertoys #kennervariants #rollsroyce
Zuckuss!!! Or as he’s known in the Kenner world, 4-LOM. Which was a mistake that was never corrected, but oh well they both have buggy eyes and an insect-like look about them. He’s still widely known among collectors as 4-LOM and the error I feel has somewhat become cannon for collectors. Regardless of the name mixup, he was still a sweet mail away figure. I still have one in his mail away baggie and box I’ll post later today. I always thought that his blaster rifle, which was exclusive to him, was one of the coolest, if not the coolest rifle offered to the vintage line with its jet black tone and double barre feature. You keep doing you Zuckuss, you keep doing you. #starwars #starwarscollection #empirestrikesback #kenner #kennertoys #bountyhunter #bountyhunterweek #zuckuss #4lom #wampacave
Here’s to the lizard dude, Bossk, on this fantastic Wednesday. Kenner made some changes when it came to this figure. He was originally release as a “Secret Star Wars Action Figure” available only through mail away offers and was obtained with 5 proofs of purchase. Up until Bossk, every other figure had been available with 4 proofs of purchase. Kenner was squeezing the Star Wars wave for all it was worth. Bossk has always been a memorable bounty hunter to me as I can still recall the vivid scaly and clawed feet from Empire Strikes Back when here’s glaring down over an imperial commander. But, did you know that Bossk also made an appearance in Return of the Jedi? If you pay close attention he can be found in a couple shots in Jabba’s palace as well as in the background on Jabba’s Khetanna sail barge. Which begs the question, did Bossk meet his fate on the Khetanna when it blew? Or did he escape? What do you think? #starwars #starwarscollection #bossk #kenner #kennertoys #empirestrikesback #returnofthejedi #bountyhunter #bountyhunterweek #wampacave
Dengar, the little guy in the bunch, will mark our Tuesday bounty hunter week. What he lacks in size he makes up for in whit and a “guns a blazing” type persona. Another bounty hunter tasked with hunting down Han and the Millennium Falcon, Dengar’s figure was an big gun toting hombre that added to the growing cast of bounty hunter characters. I always felt that out of all of them, Dengar was the tough guy in the group. #toughguytuesday #starwars #starwarscollection #dengar #bountyhunter #bountyhunterweek #kenner #kennertoys #empirestrikesback
Okie dokie, we’re kicking off bounty hunter week with this guy, 4-LOM. That’s right, I’m calling him by his REAL name. So the scoop on this fella is that he is a protocol Droid that overran his programming and became an infamous bounty hunter worthy of helping track down the Millennium Falcon and its crew in the Empire Strikes Back blah blah blah....But the Kenner toy side has a more controversial story. In 1982 Kenner began advertising for a mail away figure called 4-LOM, only there was a mixup with Lucasfilm and his name was reversed with another bounty hunter in the movie named Zuckuss. When really 4-LOM should have actually been Zuckuss, Zuckuss became 4LOM and vice versus creating this confusing paradox of fandemonium that continues to this day. Kenner never did go back and switch the names around correctly and continued to produce and print the incorrectly labeled names on their figure cardbacks. Nevertheless this “the real” 4-LOM figure, though not the stealthiest looking, was a sweet addition to the bounty hunter lineup and gave the protocol Droid a dangerous insectoid appearance. I hope you’re more confused now than before you started. Happy 4-LOMonday #starwars #starwarscollection #4lom #behindthescenes #empirestrikesback #bountyhunterweek #wampacave
