I’ve been working on several design projects for different clients this summer. I’m totally not a designer (my 3 year old is more creative with crayons than I an), so what value do I add? . Well a marketing manager’s role is to fully understand the client’s business, product offer and customer, as well as have a clear vision of the brand. So for each project I have been able to outline to the designer the job that the final website or print item needs to do for the client, the message it needs to convey and the type of customer that message needs to appeal to. On behalf of my clients, I’ve talked brand guidelines, print finishes and paper weights (an expensive product needs quality paper and print effects, for example). . I was just sitting there staring at the keyboard... Nothing share-worthy came to my mind. And I got frustrated by the minute, as I knew I had to keep my social media flow consistent. I bought those stock photos, I hired that social media marketing coach, I even had that VA, but they could all work with me if I helped them with creating content. "How should I know what to share that people will love to read and share with their friends?", my mind was echoing with this question. And then it slowly dawned on me. My personal brand, my service-based business is me. So I just gotta tell my story over and over again, until people learn enough about me to trust my expertise. So my fingers started swiftly typing away. I didn't even bother with typos. I wrote freely what came to mind. Then I hit send on the email to my team and hoped they could come up with a social media strategy using my story. Then I stood up from my laptop feeling relieved, light-hearted, and hopeful that I should never have this daunting feeling about content creation. This is a question boiling in my mind for days now. Let me ask you something before I dive into it: Would you be a member of Alpha-Beta-Gamma or be accepted at Harvard? Now your answer reveals the difference between a membershipsite and an online academy. Online Academy provides for different courses that are logically built upon one another. Upon enrollment the learning curve is designed so as students can excell in one specific field of expertise. They need to pass thresholds to get higher as well as to acquire a deeper understanding of the topics related to that one expertise. They might even compete with each other to be the best or to be able to get scholarships and grants. Membershipsites, however, are predominantly a space created for casual information transfer, socializing and networking for like-minded people in an organized manner. These sites provide for guidance but doesnt provide for in-depth instruction in the field. It opens up pathways to grow, it sparks motivation for further research, and ultimately creates a common space for shared experience. Why would you NOT use them for what they are meant to be used? All those hybrid solutions and badly-structured spaces add up to your students overwhelm and confusion. Do NOT spare your precious knowledge in poorly- structured institutions with a bunch of non-natives in them. Take your time to plan, design and build solid structures for your expertise that meets the EMOTIONAL READINESS of your students aka IDEAL CLIENTS. A few lessons ago, Michelle mentioned that effective branding/marketing carries a single emotive thread throughout – an emotion you promise to evoke. It's a big part of your brand "voice". Everything you say is filtered through it. For this brand (Designing to Delight), my brand promise word is HOPE. **HOPE** that you can get off the hamster wheel and hope that you can totally have projects that will run smoothly and clients who love your work. *Hope* is the lens I filter everything through. This word is not based in a *result*, because I'm just introducing them to my brand. Its algorithm uses machine learning to filter through a broad audience and only target those likely to respond to your ad. This means it’s better to start wider and give your ad more people to choose from. This is an age long Nigerian pidgin proverb that tells a succinct truth about branding. We all know that people buy names, designers or location of manufacture of the product. They really don't care about the durability, Effectiveness, Quality etc, as long as it is bears a Foreign name or a semblance of one, has a notable designer's logo or label or its from UK, USA, DUBAI, ITALY ... they just want it over the nameless product even if its of a higher quality and durability. What we are seeing here is the effect of a well-branded product wrapped in the perception of the brand delivering superior quality that now customers can go as far as giving excuse for a brand on the account of a defective product, but before that happened, the brand must have consistently delivered on their promise and maintained their message. You too can be such brand that customers will choose because your name is synonymous with superior quality, promise kept and message maintained.
