🎶I only love my bed and my mama...I’m sorry 🎵 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😂 but seriously I do love my bed! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So many of us have a hard time sleeping or staying asleep through the night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One reason you may have a hard time falling asleep is over-stimulation of the sympathetic system. An active sympathetic system keeps you up at night. This system is also known as you “fight or flight” system. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Chronic stress can cause this system to be always ON. I know what you are thinking but I’m not that stressed. The thing is your body treats stress no matter emotional or physical the same. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Examples of stress -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •Emotional stress, what most people associate as stress⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •Cognitive stress, all those crazy demands we put in ourselves •Sensory stress, yes loud noises, those bright lights at work, you get the picture ⠀⠀⠀⠀ •Metabolic stress, too much exercise, high blood sugar, crazy diets of the moment. ⠀⠀⠀ •Environmental toxins, pollution, pesticides on food, crap in our skincare products, etc⠀ •Immune stress, underlying infections, inflammation, food allergies and sensitivities ⠀⠀⠀ •Imbalances in our body, thyroid, hormonal, menopause.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THIS IS ALL STRESS to the body! And this is certainly not a full list! Anything that causes your body to stay in that “fight or flight” mode will keep your sympathetic system ON! And do you know what happens ... it shuts everything down.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •digestion is slowed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •your metabolism slowed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •detoxing is slowed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •heart rate raises ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •blood pressure raises ⠀⠀⠀ Our bodies need time to calm down after stressful situations. If we are in a constant state of stress, homeostasis in the body can not be balanced. Ways to decrease stress- there are so many, from a walk, reading a book, hanging out with friends or family. Anything you enjoy, make the time to do it more! Take a bath before bed with lavender and Epson salts, use essential oils, have a cup of chamomile tea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Need a quick fix- plug your right nostril and breathe deep and slow out if your left 👃🏻 This helps to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, the system that calms you 😇 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Try it!
