Frank Pick | 1. This week’s posts will celebrate one of the greatest design patrons of the 20th century, Frank Pick, who established London Transport as a model of modern design management, to celebrate the anniversary of his birth on 23 November 1878. Born to a strict non-conformist family in the Lincolnshire town of Spalding, Pick studied law before joining the North Eastern Railway as a management trainee. When the general manager, Sir George Gibb, moved to London as chairman of the Underground Group in 1906, he took Pick with him. And when Pick criticised the marketing strategy, Gibb put him in charge of it. Thanks to Pick, some of the most gifted designers, architects and artists of the age, including Harry Beck, Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy designed the visual and structural elements of the rapidly expanding Underground network, from stations, signage, posters and maps, to the fabric that covered the train seats. #design #frankpick @londonunderground @transportforlondon #designmanagement #designpatron #britishmodernism
The English #artist , #writer , #poet , art critic and pugnacious provocateur Percy #WyndhamLewis was born #OnThisDay in 1882.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ In the visual arts, Lewis is best known as co-founding the #Vorticist movement with his close friend Ezra Pound, which was established in the months prior to the outbreak of World War I. Although aesthetically similar to Cubism, its ethos was more closely associated with Futurism and its celebration of the machine age and modern life.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ The painting shown here is called ‘Workshop’ (c.1914-1915) and relies on harsh, intersecting diagonals and jarring colours to depict the architecture of the modern city.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Regram @francisacedo #art #artwork #painter #painting #paint #arthistory #arthistory4everyone #modernism #britishart #britishmodernism #warartist #picoftheday #modern #modernist

In our new ‘Photo Essay’ series, we’ll be publishing the work of photographers who explore themes relating to architecture, design, interiors and landscape for fresh perspectives on the built and natural environment. Here, we invite creative director Jethro Marshall to share images from his ongoing project ‘West Country Modern’.“As digital technology became widely available, as urban populations grew, the rise of street photography and people recording the fabric of their environment resulted in our cities being very thoroughly documented,” says Jethro. “West Country Modern is a modest attempt at doing the rural equivalent.” Link in our profile for more. @jjmarshallassociates @westcountrymodern #photoessay #tmhtakeover #britishmodernism

🚨 NEW TALK TOMORROW 🚨 . . In tomorrow’s talk, art historian #RichardCork charts the life of the long-neglected British painter #DavidBomberg via his psychologically charged self-portraits. One of eleven children born to a family of Polish-Jewish immigrants, the young Bomberg hoped that his artistic talent and Slade training would be a ticket out of poverty. In spite of his extraordinary artistic abilities, and the legacy he left in British art, this proved tragically not to be the case. . . In recent years, Bomberg’s painting has finally began to see the levels of acclaim his influence and flair merits. Cork examines the astonishing power of his portraits to transport us into his inner world, and the variety of the artistic movements he passed through. In a sense, they constitute the artists biography that no critic in Bomberg’s lifetime was willing to write. . . #Film #artfilm #Boroughschool #modernism #modernist #painter #painting #vorticist #cubist #Britishmodernism #20thcenturyart #Britishart #cubist #Modernart #arthistory #artdocumentary #crisisofbrilliant #slade #londonart

The 19th century art critic once said, “If you haven’t drawn it, you haven’t seen it.” Sketching is an invaluable tool for analyzing and engaging with artwork. It forces the viewer to stop and truly take it all in. 👁 Our MA #ArtBusiness Director in #London , @davibellingham , captured this moment of examination during a recent trip with students to the Tate St. Ives and the #BarbaraHepworth Museum, where Hepworth’s pierced wood and stone sculptures invite the viewer to notice both the presence and absence created by the work. #BritishModernism #TateStIves #SothebysInstitute . See the art world in a new light. Applications for our Fall 2019 Master’s programs are now open. Tap the link in bio for more.

Forgive one more obscure advert - this one is for Hammond & Champness lifts of Walthamstow and their patented VCC, or Vernier Cushion Control to you and I. I think Reginald Uren's house at 14 Kerry Avenue deserves a seperate post so here it is. A truly modernist delight in brick, it was built by Uren (New Zealand born architect of Hornsey Town Hall) for his own family. For me it was the highlight of the Stanmore walking tour. It's a great pity however that the original windows, and no doubt lots of interior details, were very recently lost in a renovation by the current owner. See David Anderson's photo here for comparison. Thanks again to Josh @mod_in_metro for the fascinating tour. M. #stanmore #reginalduren #modernisthouse #britishmodernism #openhouselondon

Checked up on Kent House in Camden Town today. They've been repainted since we last visited (the balconies are now black instead of red, and the blue of the windows is possibly a shade less electric) but I'm still not sure if it bears any relation to the original scheme. Glad to see them getting some TLC though. Completed in 1935 by Colin Lucas (of Connell, Ward and Lucas) the flats provided compact social housing for the St Pancras House Improvement Society. Strangely the flats were the only ones commissioned from the famous modernist practice despite being well received at the time. #kenthouse #connellwardandlucas #britishmodernism #modernistapartments #modernistflats #modernisttourists

Born into wealth in 1903, British designer Denham MacLaren led a charmed life. After studying at Cambridge and the Slade School for Fine Art, MacLaren began work for the interior decorator Arundell Clark, but his most innovative designs were created for his own use. In the 1930s, after moving into a family-owned London house, MacLaren began dividing the building into separate apartments which he decorated using his own designs (slide 2). Sandwiching the chair's seat and back between thick slabs of industrial glass, MacLaren captured the spirit of European modernism better than any other British designer. . . #chair #chairaware #chairdesign #furniture #furnituredesign #mobilia #mobilario #mobilarios #silla #stuhl #design #designers #designoftheday #chairoftheday #designinnovation #designhistory #midcenturydesign #midcenturymodern #collectibledesign #moderndesign #modernism #modernfurniture #modernfurnituredesign #modernistdesign #Britishdesign #Britishmodernism #DenhamMacLaren #glasschair #glasschairs #raredesign

#LucienneDay is a legend and it’s great to see any design exhibitions in Dublin (there are so few). However, the exhibition of her work at the Coach House of #DublinCastle is disappointing. No original artefacts, mostly photos, and very little contextual information. However, the display of large rolls of fabric (reprints) - including #Calyx , designed for the #FestivalOfBritain (1951) - is lovely and worth making the effort for. This: Trio (1954).
