Frank Pick | 1. This week’s posts will celebrate one of the greatest design patrons of the 20th century, Frank Pick, who established London Transport as a model of modern design management, to celebrate the anniversary of his birth on 23 November 1878. Born to a strict non-conformist family in the Lincolnshire town of Spalding, Pick studied law before joining the North Eastern Railway as a management trainee. When the general manager, Sir George Gibb, moved to London as chairman of the Underground Group in 1906, he took Pick with him. And when Pick criticised the marketing strategy, Gibb put him in charge of it. Thanks to Pick, some of the most gifted designers, architects and artists of the age, including Harry Beck, Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy designed the visual and structural elements of the rapidly expanding Underground network, from stations, signage, posters and maps, to the fabric that covered the train seats.
