I’ve had a long history of low back pain and tightness which would come on with running and sometimes lifting weights. The seemingly odd thing was I could deadlift heavy without much pain but sometimes bending repeatedly to load the bar or put plates away would trigger the pain. Once I rested the pain would go away and it never affected me during daily activities. But when I started CrossFit about a year ago this became a much bigger issue because of the high volume movements. Eventually I decided it was time to start doing something about it and began doing dedicated rehab before/after workouts...something I’ve never committed to doing consistently before.
I can honestly say my back had never felt better. There are still occasional workouts where I’ll feel my back get tight but it’s much less often and I know with continued work I can get beyond that. Here’s a sampling of some exercises I’ve been doing recently...paused deadlifts, sandbag carries, and bench supported reverse hyperextensions. It may not look like what you’d consider to be “rehab” but it absolutely is because it’s preparing me for the demands of my sport. And my capacity for CrossFit workouts continues to increase because of it.
If you’re dealing with something similar just know that your spine is not as fragile as people would have you believe. It’s strong and resilient and you can overcome any pain or injury with smart and consistent rehab/training. These videos are in no way prescribing what you should do if your back hurts, but just trying to open up your mind to what rehab could look like. My pain threshold is fairly high at this point, but if yours isn’t, then find what you can do without pain and then gradually progress loading. If you have questions about this feel free to shoot me a DM!
Today's marks the tragic passing of the incredible artist #camilleclaudel
. Who's work I love. My portrait (very old work) of her hangs in #Brookfield
paying homage to her in a small way. She was her own women and a rare talent. If you don't know her story Google it. She unfortunately died in an #asylum
in the early 1900s after being incarcerated in there for 30 years where nobody knew of her gift. I'm delighted she finally has her own museum now. Thanks @museecamilleclaudel
for giving her work a proper and loving home. RIP XXX
