My final quick grades for the first round.
Lakers: Moritz Wagner: C+. I like Wagner fine, but his was a big reach. They could've picked a guy like Robert Williams, who has much more upside. Wagner is a good fit, but this pick was simply way to early. -
76ers: Landry Shamet: B-. Shamet is a solid player. I don't see him getting serious minutes this year, but he could be a solid bench option down the road. I think Philly did reach here for a player they don't really need. -
Celtics: Robert Williams: A+. Even if Williams doesn't improve his motor, this is a risk worth taking. Boston has plenty of adequate bigs, so getting a potential star at 27 is a major steal. Really good pick.
Warriors: Jacob Evans: A. Warriors nailed this pick. Evans is a nice scorer and on-ball defender. He could be the Andre Iguodala of the future for the Warriors. Definitely not a star, but a nice pick.
Nets: Dzanan Musa: B+. Musa is a solid scoring wing. Musa is going to be a horrible defender, but other defensive wings can hide his deficiencies, such as DeMarre Carroll. Again, he won't be a star, but he could be a Bojan Bogdanovic or Danilo Gallinari. -
Hawks: Omari Spellman: C+. I get it. The Hawks were trying to draft all the shooters they could. Let's face it, this wasn't a good pick. Spellman isn't an elite rim protector or defender, which puts a lot of pressure on John Collins. I don't see him getting minutes behind DeWayne Dedmon, or Mike Muscala. He should be sent to the G-League and become a better defender before he can be effective in the NBA.
