Students read magazines for young girls that discuss girl issues - boys, fashion, friendships, parents - as they sit together in the girl's safe room at Paysannat L school at Mahama Refugee Camp in Kirehe, eastern Rwanda.
Mahama hosts around 54,000 refugees who fled Burundi after violence broke out in 2015. Around 20,000 children attend the Paysannat L school, it’s one of the largest schools in the world. 80% are Burundian refugees, 20% are from the Rwandan host community. Paysannat L follows a nationwide programme to keep girls in school. The programme focuses on girls' cultural values, encourages the avoidance of early pregnancy and helps to create a safety-conscious, risk-aware, clear vision for their future. It’s a amazing feeling walking into this quiet safe space with two teachers assigned especially to care for girls needs, away from the fast noisy life outside of 20,000 school kids. Every school in the world should have a girls safe room!
