When you really get down to it what do we all want? No, what do we all NEED?
To feed ourselves and our family, a safe place to sleep? To knowledge that our work, the fruits of our labour, will bring us long life with friends and family?
How we choose to pursue that dream is often defined by where you live, what opportunities are there for you. Does your environment create a space that allows you to live, to love to grow.
In my life I have sat with a million other people, stuck in traffic, smog belching, angry drivers. The very definition of the concrete jungle. I have wedged by body into trains and buses to get to work, smelling their fear and desperation of their office cubicle at the other end. Not once, never, in all those years did I look over and think “I wish I was that person”. Not those sitting in Mercedes Benz or wearing a Rolex watch or expensive suits, they had nothing I wanted, because I saw no happiness.
Although this fisherman perhaps has not made a conscious choice to pursue this way of feeding himself, it might be a lack of other opportunities, has he found a better way? There is a story down there, I know that. Perhaps he has a day job at the bank but comes out at sunset for the simple satisfaction of catching a fish. He might be a young man looking for anyway to make money to top up his phone, help his mother or catch something to eat. I don’t know.
What I know is that I give thanks to be closer to this style of living, to feel part of a wide open ocean. To feel the first kiss of sunrise every day and the last rays of sunset and know that in between, my day had connections to people and nature and that in some infinitesimal way I made some difference. Maybe just a ripple on this big ocean but, like this fisherman, enough to feed my soul.
Take a moment today, where ever you are, and meditate, allow your mind to float on this big ocean and feel the cooling breeze that welcomes the setting sun.
