Working on heart openers 💖
Being an introvert, I usually like to incorporate a lot of backbends and heart openers in my asana practice in attempt to counter my shyness.
I’ve felt more introverted, quiet, and lethargic than normal lately, so I’ve been doing this even more.
Heart openers actually do open our heart, literally and figuratively, and backbends can help energize and awaken us.
Somewhat contrary to this, if one day I feel paralyzed with social anxiety, I include a lot of forward folds and pranayama.
Creating balance is a process.
Keep going, even if you don’t want to.
Even if you feel like it isn’t working.
It is, you just can’t see it yet.
So this last weekend was challenging for me. I know God is calling me out to share more and do more. It is hard for me to come out of hiding. It feels uncomfortable. Vulnerable. Yet the blessing of surrendered obedience meets me at the place He is calling me out to. I taught my first Holy Yoga class and there I shared this verse God gave me the night before: “We want to tell you about the One who was from the beginning. We have seen Him with our own eyes, heard Him with our own ears, and touched Him with our own hands. This One is the manifestation of the life-giving Voice, and He showed us real life, eternal life. We have seen it all, and we can’t keep what we witnessed quiet—we have to share it with you. We are inviting you to experience eternal life through the One who was with the Father and came down to us.” I John 1:1-5

Camel pose is my favorite back bending pose. I find it so uplifting!
One of my favorite ways to practice this pose (besides on a beach at sunrise🤗) is facing a wall with the pelvis and thighs against the wall. In this position, the wall provides helpful feedback for keeping the thighs vertical and for segmentally extending the spine up and back into the back bend.
Camel pose, including the wall variation, will be featured in Monday evening’s back bending class.

Posted this photo on my instastory yesterday and many were impressed with my flexibility. Of course, some thought it's just meh. Some even asked me "how did you fold yourself into a BOX???" .
I always thought I am a #yoga
beginner but the instructor told me to advance on my yoga skill since I have the strength and flexibility. I appreciate her effort in encouraging and providing me proper guidance. Here I am with my #camelpose

If you practice yoga as much as you say
why are you still fat?
Maybe you should stretch less
and do a little more cardio🤯.
I’ve received a few DMs like this this month
this comment being one of the harshest.
Some people are “kind”.
Suggesting a diet change or new way to practice.
Most are not.
But that doesn’t get to me like it used to.
I’ve spent time learning how to love this body.
I didn’t always though-
it’s been years in the making and I’m still working on it some days.
When I was 18, my prom dress was plus sized.
When I was 22, I was wearing an XS and had a 6 pack while cleaning 6000-12000sq feet of houses a day 5x/week plus my practice.
I’ve watched my body shrink and then grow again,
finding new strength along the way.
So what if that 6 pack has been replaced with something a little softer.
Do the fact my thighs touch again make me any less deserving of love and kindness?
You don’t have to be a certain size or number
to be a beautiful person.
That comes from within.
That person sending you hate about your size
clearly has something they have to work through themselves still.
I always try to meet these people with kindness-
hate only breeds hate.
It can be difficult
but it costs nothing to be kind
and could be just what the person receiving it needed.
So here’s to all the people
of all shapes and sizes
who are shamelessly learning to love themselves
for everything they are
in this moment.
It’s one of the hardest things you may do
but definitely so worth it.

HONESTY HOUR: I FLIPPED OVER FROM CHINSTAND A FEW DAYS AGO. yup that thing everybody’s afraid of, happened. 🙈 the inside of my lip is bruised and my nose hurts a bit but otherwise i‘m totally fine. i don’t really remember much. i wasn‘t warmed up and i was frustrated and decided (without thinking!!!!) to kick up. i just remember there being too much momentum and losing balance and i was like ”fuckkk my neck“ and then i was on the floor and my lip hurt. 😅 apparently i fell to the side, there’s even a picture because i had the remote release in my hand (i’m gonna share it in my story) 🙈 so what can we all learn from this? DO NOT KICK UP INTO A CHINSTAND. ALSO DON’T KICK UP INTO A HEADSTAND. DO YOU HEAR ME?! all the inversions where the neck is involved, especially these two are to be attempted with control and not using momentum. i obviously know this as a teacher. but that day my ego got the better of me because seriously if i think about it, i wouldn’t EVER tell someone to kick into chinstand. just no 🤦🏼♀️ it forced me to take a step back and think about some things. no more stupid decisions made out of frustration and more listening to my body. some days i‘m too tired for inversions, gotta accept that 🙏🏼 have a lovely tuesday everyone and let me hear your thoughts. 🙏🏼 #yogawithbettina #chinstand #backbendlove
