Omar Balumba Sila Is Not a Soldier, From The Series, We Are Not Soldiers, 2018, North Kivu
We are not soldiers is an extension of the photo series We are the Heritage, working in collaboration with the Aprojed project in the Northern Congo. The goal of the project was to depict the courage of children and teenagers working to surmount the burden of being an ex-child soldier. Many of them were victims- kidnaped and forced into an armed conflict, who now have finally found freedom. The trauma and stigma that still follows them, however, threatens to haunt them for the rest of their lives. I feel that their strength and power to surmount past violence needs to be showcased. By surrounding the subjects in the fabric Pagee, representing the cultural history and part of the land, I wish to show that the legacy of a nation is not based on fabrics but rather the children whose futures we must support for the strength of the community.

Have you ever been scared of telling yourself something? Have you known something for a long time and you haven't had the courage to have "that" talk with yourself yet?
I tend to use my writing to say all those words to myself that I always wanted to but never could. I think that the written word has a much greater impact on me than the spoken word. Here is the list of things I've been meaning to say to myself but haven't had the courage to. Feel free to add the things that you're too afraid to tell yourself.
i. It's okay for people to not need you. If you're with someone just because they like to emotionally rely on you that's not healthy, not for them, and not for you. It's okay for them to come up with solutions to certain problems on their own, it doesn't mean that they appreciate you any less.
ii. Your happiness does not depend on how much you achieve. If you think going to the gym for the whole week and completing all your pending work on time will leave you with the feeling of happiness, forget about it. The only thing that can lead you toward happiness is you telling yourself that you're doing the best you can even if it isn't up to your standards.
iii. Stop setting standards for yourself.
iv. Do not look in the mirror and point out at the areas where your body is a little flabby or chubby, for the love of God do not do that. Appreciate yourself by letting yourself know that you're more than just a body. You're the thoughts that you think, the words you say, the music you listen to, the books you read. Stop letting yourself go down the road which does not lead towards self love.
v. It's okay to feel lonely sometimes. Yes, you have people in your life who love you, but everybody is fighting their own battles and you have to fight yours too. They do not love you any less.
vi. It's okay to stop for a while and accept your shortcomings. Realise that you don't have to be the absolute best at everything. Strive hard to learn, but do not lose yourself while doing that.
vii. Be more accepting of your flaws.
viii. Enough with the self-deprecating humour. Stop putting yourself down in the fear that if you do it first you won't be affected when people do it.
