The Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 is an island nation in the Caribbean. Its territory takes up roughly half of the island Hispaniola from which Haiti occupies the west side. Approximately 10 million people live there of which 3 million live in or around the capital city.
The DR is known for its picturesque white sand beaches and lavish resorts🍹🥥. However, what most stands out in my mind is the Dominican's love of dancing 💃🏽 . In the DR, dance is engrained in so many aspects of the Dominican culture and is the utmost reflection of their vivacious spirit, poetic ability, and preferred pastime.
The two dance styles that dominate here are: merengue and bachata. Both originated in the DR and are partner dances yet have very distinct lyrics, rhythms, and instruments. While both dances are extremely popular internationally, there's something about dancing them in their birthplace with the music drowning out the sounds of the waves and rustling palm trees that is purely enchanting. I can't recommend the DR enough and taking in the island rhytms while there.
