This is one SPOOKY flower!! The Carrion Flower is a succulent plant native to tropical areas of southern Africa. These flowers are somewhat hairy and emit an odor of rotten flesh. 💀 It does this in order to attract flies for pollination. Come see + smell it in our Visitors' Center!
Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. Due to its odor, which is like the smell of a rotting corpse or carcass, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower.

Swooped up about a half dozen various types of Stapliead/Huernia plants the other week at the Austin Cacti & Succulent show. I’ll post more pics as they flower. Also, not totally certain on the taxonomy of these so If anyone can ID some of these let me know! #stapeliads #stapelia #carrionflower #huernia #succulents #planthoarder
Came home to all the nature today!! First, all three of my #monarchs
hatched and then I saw my #carrionflower
opened!!! Then, when I was cutting flowers for a midnight snack for them (I’ll release the butterflies tomorrow during the daylight) this little buddy came in on accident.
After weeks of waiting for that bud to open, it's finally blooming today! I didn't even know what this plant was until now and expected a typical cactus flower. Surprised! It's a stapelia. Smells like death haha 😂🤘🤮🤘#succulent #carrionflower
Happy Fall ya All! My African Starfish Flower is Blooming again! Have a great weekend! ❤️
One of our carrion flowers opened up and a burst of these faery like seeds popped out. Last year when our carrion flower bloomed, it was stinky and a lot of flies were very happy to pollinate it. This year, pollination by wind seems to be the chosen option. Isn’t nature incredible? 🌱

The other day I was in the cacti and succulents room and something smelled a bit off. Luckily I knew what to look for, and though the smell was more like a dead rodent, the flower in the image is what I was looking for. Stapelia gigantea, sometimes called carrion flower, definitely carries that smell as it attracts flies that accidentally pick up and drop off pollen as they deposit eggs or larvae where it seems there will be a food source. The balloon like buds (one in front and a larger one behind the flower here) will be opening this next week. Come and see, but don’t lean in and sniff deeply - those fragrance molecules will stay in your nose for a while if you do. Rm.2726. #xericroom #cacti
