Throwback Thursday’s and I thought of sharing a memory from my university days in Chennai ( a beautiful southern city in India) . The scorching summers of chennai was often accompanied by the cool breeze from the sea that stood rite outside our campus.(Madras University).A very busy part of the city, with people from all walks of lives and living. One interesting part of the hustle bustle were the street side vendors selling all kinds of cooling off foods, day n night , giving people some relief from the hot hours of the day . Starting from cool buttermilk, sugarcane juice, cucumbers to selling bhajjis(fried veggies) to serving quick roadside lunch.
The streets had everything you ever wished on a hot day.
My favorite was the vendor selling guavas n cucumbers. Standing under the shade of a big tree right outside the campus gate was this old man who would sell guavas n cucumbers in the morning and his wife would grill corn in the evening until late nights selling them to students , travelers , people from all walks.
He wud pick a raw one (as I preferred) for myself , easily make a cut through it to a half , and while still holding the guava close, would slide in a dash of red chili powder mixed with salt with the edge of the knife. Absolutely Smooth!! He wud then place it on a neatly cut banana leaf and hand it over to me with a tired smile just for a small price .
Most summer days I wud hang out with few of my friends enjoying the fruit bites before we parted for our homes.
In the picture , made a little sweet a little spicy and a little tangy mixture ( aka maakha) of guava n starfruit. But the deliciousness of it came all from the memories. 😊
