These new papers released by The Lancet today are BIG news.
They reveal that low back pain is now the number one cause of all disability globally- and is medically mismanaged, often against best practice guidelines.
The study states that there is "Evidence of over prescription of potentially harmful and addictive opioids for low back pain when simple physical therapies are under prescribed." There is also overuse of inappropriate tests and treatments such as imaging and surgery which means patients are not receiving the right care, resulting in long term disability. The resultant cost to the NHS is £2.1 billion every year, and low back pain costs the UK economy over £10 billion every year in lost working days and informal care.
The Lancet authors say patients should avoid harmful and useless treatments, and doctors need to address widespread misconceptions about their effectiveness. For example, there is limited evidence to support the use of opioids for low back pain, and epidural steroid injections and acetaminophen (paracetamol) are not recommended at all.
🔹WHAT IS RECOMMENDED❓
Psychological interventions. Manual therapy (such as care provided by a chiropractor, osteopath, or appropriately trained physiotherapist). Massage. Yoga. Exercise.
Given that 1 in every 7 GP appointments are for musculoskeletal conditions and low back pain is top of that list- there is SO much that we as manual therapists (chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists) can offer which would alleviate the burden low back pain has on our community, the NHS, and the UK economy.
