Whether kids are 2 or 12 (or 22 or 42 for that matter), whining is usually a sign of feeling powerless (so is complaining, btw). Yes, humans are supposedly the most advanced species, yet the reality is that 95% of life is out of our control and sometimes we really inhabit that space of having little power. So, instead of telling your kiddos to use their "big girl/boy voice," show them that you're by their side and help prop them back up until their confidence increases. The younger the child (or the more limits or setbacks they've been facing), the greater the likelihood that they'll unconsciously use whining as a signal to you that they're in need. BE YOU, DO YOU. . I cannot stress this enough. You have to be you. You cannot be anyone else in this world. You can only be you. You cannot be anyone else. . Find a speaker you admire, you respect, you relate to, and then model them. Model them until you are comfortable in those shoes. . As Amy Cuddy says: "Fake it until you become it!" . Yes, you can fake it until you become it, but you can honestly only become a better version of YOU. . I have tried to copy other speakers in the past and it was a disaster. I looked awkward, I sounded fake, and nobody bought into the message. . I have seen speakers try to copy me on the stage: it doesn't work. And I always tell speakers who I see copying others: BE YOU. And when they start to be themselves, they relax, and the whole speaking journey becomes so much easier. . Your voice, your personality, your quirks make you truly unique. And that is who we are trying to see, hear and learn from. . Go out in this world. Find out who you are and then get onto that stage and show us who you are. As Marissa Peer says: "YOU ARE ENOUGH!" . “Aggressive behavior in our children can really trigger us which usually means it doesn't get handled in a constructive manner. If you need to take action to prevent harm from being done, do so. Then, however, get close with your child and help them re-center themselves. Let them know your love is fully present as you stay calm (this will help them settle down) and make sure to refrain from any teaching or "lecturing" even if you think they need this. Oh boy, if I had gotten a nickel for all the times I got "sassy" with my parents. Anyway, I digress! ;-) Whether we call it sass, back talk, being snotty, snooty, or smart-alecky, old-style reactions to our children's less kind/polite talk could use some serious updating. Yes, it's not usually the way most of us want to be talked to, yet when we refuse to "hit back" by castigating, correcting, or shaming our kiddos, we can more effectively convey the message that respectful speech (and behavior) is what we prefer. When your child demands "Get me some water!" you could lightheartedly respond "Is there a queen visiting us today? Yes, your majesty. I'm your most humble servant!" as you bow repeatedly to them. Then after they laugh, you might add "I much prefer being asked instead of ordered, your Highness." Or, if they're talking in a way that's pretty dismissive of others, remember that they might need some extra love (we're most "nasty" with others when something inside feels out of sorts or tender in some way). For times like these, you might choose to say nothing in the moment -- giving them both space and love at the same time. Then, look for an opportunity to get close and see if you can get clear on what's got them feeling icky-prickly. The greatest gift we can give ourselves and others in conversation is to be fully present. This means putting away your phone, or any distractions, and giving the speaker your full attention. If we aren’t fully present then we can't actively listen to what is being said. This creates misunderstandings and leads to conflict. Set an intention to be fully present in all you do today and see what you notice. Not only is this respectful to the speaker, it is respectful to yourself. Practice make better. Does practice really make you better? Silly question right? Well, there is a reason that “practice” is one of the important things I emphasize when I’m teaching public speaking courses or people I’m coaching one-on-one. In fact, There was a psychological research study done at Rice University a few years back and they found some data that backs the claims that practice does indeed make better. According to Dr. Fred Oswald, “‘deliberate practice’ – defined as engagement in structured activities created specifically to improve performance in a specific field – explained 26 percent of the variance in performance for games, 21 percent for music, 18 percent for sports, 4 percent for education and less than 1 percent for professions.” What do you plan to “Practice deliberately?”

Parents get irritated fast when they think their children aren't listening. Yet what I notice happening 9 times out of 10 is that we parents are speaking without first checking to see if they're ready to listen to us. It's really a bit of a god/king/monarch complex that gets us thinking that our kids should automatically listen whenever we speak. Hop off your high horse (and I'll join you, because I sometimes do this too) and start your next communication by honoring whatever focus your child presently has (be it reading a book, playing in the yard, watching a video, daydreaming, etc.). See where your child is and what they're up to, and after being in their presence for 5 seconds, say something like, "Hey, could I talk with you for a minute?" or "Could you pause what you're doing as I have a question to ask?" If you are a speaker, you have to read it. Well, this is the Heath brothers latest offering and it is amazing. , The argue that PEAK MOMENTS MATTER in businesses and in life. This is so true. And they even define what is a peak moment and suggest some ways that peak moments can be constructed by businesses to improve revenues, customer engagement and overall customer experience. . It is an incredible read. . They suggest peak moments consist of FOUR things. . * Elevate. * Insights. * Pride. * Connection. . How similar are these to when we speak. When we speak we need to create PEAK MOMENTS every time. From the way we lay out the room, from the way we walk into the room, from the way the audience first experience us before the speech. How do you create and build peak moments? . The four elements above are easily powerful elements of speaking. . If you are delivering a speech, how are you elevating your AUDIENCE to a higher plane? I often wonder why people I know complain about their employees’ performance and behavior when they don’t give them any feedback🤔🤦🏾‍♀️. Too often you expect that employees will just know what to do​, and how​ to improve ​gaps in their ​performance ​but ​that’s not how it works.. . . . ​E​very week for 6 months I would ask for feedback​ from my former manager​ but nothing, then he turns around ​one day & says my performance is weak, pardinnn you for see ​how I burst my Warri kungfu give am shuwo​ 😡🤣. Think back to when you were an employee & you had a manager who never gave you any feedback, I bet you channeled that anger into delivering poor performance. . . When utilized appropriately #feedback , is one of the strongest tools that you can use to get better results from your #teams . Toddler Tip Tuesday. Listen to your child and talk to them by paraphrasing or expanding on what they just said. This makes them feel understood and what their saying is important and also gives you a chance to expand the conversation and learn more about their feelings. They might say “mama I’m scared” and you might say “does that statue make you feel scared? What is it that about it that makes you feel scared you think?” Also you don’t always need to fill the silence when having a conversation with them. Life really flows more smoothly when children are responsive to our requests. Instead of getting frustrated, repeating yourself ad nauseam, or griping at your kids, remember that real-time connection allows our children to be in a "yes" space to our influence. SPEAKERS ARE THINKERS. . A few months ago I had the pleasure of learning from the 2016 World Champion of Public speaking - @darrentaywcps (Darren Tay) In his keynote he said this amazing line: . "Great Public Speaking comes from Great Private Thinking." . How true. Great speaking requires great thinking. Thinking about life, thinking about our stories, thinking about the lessons learned. . Darren also spoke about how people come to listen to our INSIGHTS and not our knowledge. To get insights we need to think deep. Really deep. . I didn’t even have to open my mouth & my team would already get the vibe 🙆🏽‍♀️ communication is so much more than just the words we speak or write. It’s also the nonverbal actions and behaviors we exhibit every day. Each of these subtle nonverbal cues communicates volumes to our team members. Both good and bad. . . I’m constantly learning to be self aware, to understand what triggers me or puts me in a bad mood and I try to avoid those things when possible like I avoid Lagos traffic, you can try it too.When it’s something unavoidable, find healthy ways to manage your emotions so you can manage your team better. I bought it first thing this morning. And I know it is going to change my life. . I have blasted through parts in the beginning and it is amazing. My favorite quote so far: . "Terrible is better than mediocre. It has flavor." . I know it is a great book. . For a long time now I have believed speakers must be great readers. If you don't read, how can you grow? If you don't read, how can you learn? If you don't read, how can you stay up to date? But we must choose what we read wisely. . How did I choose this book? Tony Robbins recommended it. Your body talks! . Whether you like it or not, your body is always speaking. And it SELDOM LIES!. . When delivering a speech, your actions must match your message! If your actions do not reflect your words, your audience won't believe you. Interrogators and negotiators train endlessly to read body language and signals. Your audience may not be that sophisticated, but they will figure it out. . Body Language includes everything: eyes, facial expression, posture, hand gestures, movement. Everything. . If you want to see the power of body language, go back and review the opening moments of Steve Jobs iPhone launch. Compare that to the first few moments of Tim Cook announcing the iPhone 6S (see on Youtube). Their body language is poles apart. . The best is to practice practice practice. Practice in front of a mirror to see how you are moving. Record your speeches, review and fix it. . Body Language comes from years of working on it. But it is important. If you get it right, you become even more convincing, more powerful, more effective as  as speaker, as a communicator. . Work at it, work at it, work at it. . The quickest and most effective thing you can do: learn to stand straight, stand tall. Shoulders back. Legs shoulder length apart. Chin-up. Look at your audience. . Remember to smile. Start it with “How can you and I partner to...and then finish the question using one of the following options: "...find a solution?" "...move this project forward?" "...get you what you need?" "...address this issue?" "...create a path forward?" . This approach sends a signal to the employee: "I'm not here to fix this; I'm here to partner with you. You will fix this problem, and I will ensure you've got what you need to do so." Our local council is providing bush homes with free bee hives in order to increase the numbers of the local stingless native bees. These bees create unusual single-layer spiraling hives that are completely unlike flat beehives. There is only one entrance to each hive, and it is coated in a sticky layer that helps trap pathogens to prevent them from entering the hive. 🐝 Bees can teach us a lot about teamwork, effort, collaboration, honest communication, cooperation and the fair division of labour. It’s the group behaving harmoniously as one, in pursuit of a common goal which brings success.
