Community: We Need to Do Better.
Today's post is an OPEN DISCUSSION. I invite you to leave a comment, engage with others and invite your friends to join.
This morning, one of Instagram's most recognized travel accounts was publicly called out on allegations of SCAMMING hundreds of her followers. These people, were simply looking for answers on how to become more successful on a platform, which is currently estimated to bring in over 4 billion $ in revenue. Instead, they received a skeleton of what they were promised and eventually ended up with nothing altogether.
So why should we care? And why is this problematic? Well, let's start by reminding ourselves of a very important premise: Instagram is a COMMUNITY. What we are on this platform is a reflection of what we receive back from the community. Our presence on this platform is only as strong as the engagement we receive back. Just as in real life, there should be ethics and rules on how those in positions of power should treat those who gave them the power to be there. But of course, on social media, such ethics don't really exist. But, with followers comes a responsibility such as not tricking people into investing in a product unless it provides them with a real benefit, and making prices for these services a fair reflection of their quality. There are many other things, that "influencers" should do and the amazing thing about social media is that it offers ALL of us a voice to improve and protect our community.
Second, we need to educate ourselves and become more aware of tricks and scams. Half of the work is changing the way top influencers use this platform. The other half is what YOU, can do. First, there is NO magic set of rules to become instafamous. There are many alternative, (often sketchy) ways but I can guarantee you THERE IS NO SECRET. It's either slow, organic growth (and some luck!) or 💰. Also, check your sources. Instead of paying an influencer, consider taking a photography course. Up your content first before you go looking for shortcuts. And lastly, be wary of who you put your trust into. Look at your favourite influencers with a critical eye and be the change.
