While The Church has grown softer since its heyday of moralism, even twenty years prior to now, the freedom cry to practice religion without constraint was also a Baptist principle. It was taught and considered that Christians not only arrived to America, The New World, to be free to worship whatsoever they chose, but to do so without the hindrance from government or neighboring sects of faith (Mark 12:17a). This is what those who inscribed our Constitution and who designed the Declaration wanted for the newly created United States of America. The Baptist Church has continued and strove to continue, that single designation in order that no rights be violated and no manner of man be unhinged from his persecution for his individuality in believing. While Christianity is often the most obstructed, it is harder in these times to find men adequate in their bold and confident measure to guard from the impotence that churches are folded into (1 Timothy 3:1-13), wherein prayer is reduced (Acts 6:4), The Name of Jesus is ridiculed (Mark 9:39), and the elements of Judeo-Christian values are limited, maligned, and altogether shunned from a public marketplace (1 Corinthians 6:12). We decry the absence of St. Peters and St. Pauls. Where are the witnesses who accept their ignominy for testimony, and do not relent?: “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death” (Revelation 12:10-11)
1. Banning “Assault Weapons”, won’t change anything. 66% of mass shootings in the U.S. are committed with handguns. 80% of gun crimes are committed with handguns overall. Weapon bans have been tried before, and they didn’t work because it is almost impossible to draw the line between legal and not. When you ban guns, criminals control the market for those guns. Also, according to the Washington Post, 79% of gun crimes are committed with guns that were borrowed or stolen from a legal owner.
2. Before you blindly follow an issue, look at the facts. Nearly 96.2% of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones (Lott, More Guns, Less Crime). Why? Because they are an invitation. 38,000 people died from gun violence in 2016. 66% were suicides, some were accidents, and others were justified. That amounts to 1-2000 legitimate gun homicides that year. That’s a lot less than 38000. Also, the Journal of Quantitative Criminology estimates that guns are used 989,000 times annually for self-defense purposes. While many DGU surveys are overestimates, this falls in line with the commonly reported 700k to 2.5m DGU range. Here are some other statistics to put things into perspective. Mass shootings account for about 1% of gun deaths. The U.S. ranks 1st in the world in gun ownership but is 28th in gun murders, and 31st in gun violence.
3. Finally, let’s look at the effects of gun legislation in certain places and how it worked there. Chicago has extremely restrictive gun laws, including an assault weapons ban, and yet they have one of the higher rates of gun violence in the United States. There are over 400 homicides every year in Chicago alone. Australia has had 2 mandatory gun buybacks, in 1996 as well as in 2003. And indeed, gun rates did go down. But when you compare gun violence before and after the gun buybacks, nothing changed. Gun violence continued to decrease at the same rate it had been before. The UK has enacted many forms of gun legislation in the past 30 years. But after those laws were passed, gun crime did indeed go down, but other crime went up drastically, specifically knife attacks. The point is, people find other means to the same end.

The bible says: 'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
