🥪Sympathetic VS. Parasympathetic Part 2/2🥪
Leading from my recent post discussing toleration in correlation to stress, today I want to focus towards hunger and stress.
Regardless if it is pizza, french fries, or even Chick-fil-A, the undeniable aromatics of food will initiate two habits:
🍟 Create a sense of hunger.
🍟“Sooth/Calm” the nervous system.
Now, I emphasized the word “sooth/calm” because of the correlation it holds towards the parasympathetic nervous system. The system that is responsible for “calming/distressing” our response to heightened cues.
Speaking of cues, I heavily emphasize the use of listening to your body when in comes to hunger and satiety (Intuitive) for a reason. Lots of you have expressed opinions towards your hunger being either decreased or heightened at certain points of the day.
Naturally, being in a stressed state makes it hard for food to digest, along with blunting hunger cues.
See, when you are in sympathetic state (Fight or Flight), the body has one goal, protect and survive. Within this state, the last ultimatum is for your nervous system to send hunger cues to your brain to eat.
Lets take Thanksgiving for an example. You walk into a kitchen, begin to socialize, and naturally begin to smell the aromatics of food being cooked. Your body naturally begins to shift into parasympathetic state from the calming conversation from friends and the comforting smells from the food being cooked.
Although, say you are coming from a stressed state from either work, a training session, or even a long day. After being home for a few minutes, you naturally begin to have hunger cues that relax and calm you. Now, this will range dependent upon each individual due to various factors within their day.
Just like when you were a kid/teenager, if you were hungry you ate, if you weren’t, you didn’t. Low and behold your muscle mass/composition was still present/identical the next day.
The takeaway, do not be afraid if you are not hungry at certain times when you are “Expected” to eat from society.
Metabolism never knows what society expects.
Metabolism just know YOU and only YOU.
